Even in Spain the pronunciation of the "j" in Rioja varies, as to be
unrecognisably the same letter.

I see no great effort to get the French to pronounce Londres as
"London". Most of the time they are talking to another French person and
want to be understood by that French person.

Or the Americans to pronounce Cholmondeley as Cholmondeley <grin>.

Most English people have trouble pronouncing Fowey, Mousehole etc.

In France no one ever calls me by my masculine name (Nicholas). It was
always what would be in the UK a girls name. I understood and got over
it, PDQ.

Similarly, double-l and v. The Spanish for key is pronounced "lyabvay" in
castilian. Some decades ago I asked for my hotel key in Uruguay and got a
puzzled look until I made key-turning gestures and was told that it was a
"shavay". Later, in Mexico, I was told it was a "zavay". All spelled the
same way - llave.

I made that joke in ye shedde years ago and was reminded that it originated
as a comment by Viktor Borge about Danish.

It says something about the Serapu that, even though the name of my
Canadian province ir *Latin*, they insist on applying a Serapuvsvrq
name.

I once knew an American named Cholmondeley who did *not* pronounce it
as Cholmondeley. Last I heard, 1970s, he was working on an oil rig
off Texas. Don't know how the Texan roughnecks pronounced it.

I once read a Dutch novel (in English translation) in which one of the
characters referred to "the beauty of the Dutch language." There was
footnote, the only footnote in the book.

The footnote read, "The translator begs to differ,"

Over here in the USA, I once attended a conference in Los Angeles.
After a meeting, several of us went to a large, formal bar with
skylights and shrubbery abounding.
The waiter, a tall, formal chap in a spotless red coat asked what
we'd like.
I said, "I don't suppose you have Irish.." hoping for Tullamore Dew.
He replied quietly, in a veddy formal British accent, "Not really...
we have Bushmills."
I ordered a brandy.

To be perfectly fair, I have never spoken to or corresponded with
either a French person or a Quebecois on the subject so while "Nouvelle
Ecosse" shows up in many bilingual Canadian places, I can't be
entirely certain that it isn't the result of overzealus anglophones
trying to be politically correct.
