Here's a chance to test that theory:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qGK1ETb-38

(Trailer for the Swedish/Danish production of "The Bridge" with both
languages being spoken - although there is a running joke through the
series that the Danish cop speaks dreadful Swedish (Or was it the
other way around? - I forget.))

When I were a boatering, I moored up in Slaithwaite that the natives
pronounce Slouwitt I was reliably informed.

I moved the car on to the next watery destination, and tried to get a
train back.

In the ticket office at that 'uddersfield I confidently asked for a
single ticket to Slouwitt.

"Where?" he asked.

"Slouwitt."

He looked puzzled for a moment, then brightened.

"Oh, you mean Slaithwaite!" he said in rich Yorkshirish.

I've found that most people can pronounce Fleming correctly. The problem
comes more with the spelling, even though all the famous ones [1] spell
it correctly.

[1] Jason Flemyng being a bit of an exception, but at least it's one "m".

The mother of a friend of mine lives in Slaithwaite Hall, in
Slaithwaite. According to said friend, it's "Slouwitt".

Completely uninteresting fact #36: the Robot Wars entrant SMIDSY was
built at Slaithwaite Hall.

Completely uninteresting fact #37: the Local Shop for Local People in
the League of Gentlemen (a WWP programme) was on the other side of the
valley to Slaithwaite Hall.

Completely uninteresting fact #38: Slaithwaite Hall doesn't look much
like a Hall.

If you want s'more, in that Scotland: Milngavie pronounced M'lguy; round
here in Norfolk, Tacolneston = Tacolston; Bunwell = Bunnel (to rhyme
with gunwale); Stiffkey = Stookey; and a lot more like that.

Anyone xabj where Wogahamsel is?

I cannot speak for the others, but a do believe that Stiffkey is as
spelt. Stookey would be a Scottish word or pronunciation. But who am I
to say, I have only visited Stiffkey and Scotland.

The vicar of Stiffkey came to an unfortunate end in Skegness like Albert
in Blackpool. Being in 'bracing' Skegness, he tried to brace open a
lion's mouth with his head. His head did not provide a strong enough
brace. 'Ooh Nasty' as Lt. Philips would say.

I have the advantage of you, then: I have lived in Scotland (or should I
say 'stayed'?) and I now live not twenty miles from Stiffkey, in 'Bunnel.

While it is true that not all East-Coast-of-Norfolk Dumplings say
'Stewkey/Stookey', an awful lot do, especially to non-Dumplings.

And I do know about the late vicar: he used to travel to that London and
seek-out prostitutes and (allegedly, by him) try to 'save' them, for
which possibly unseemly behaviour (but never proven) he was unfrocked,
unvicared and generally, but not universally, reviled.

Diss, BTW, is pronounced 'Diss', but Happisborough is pronounced
'Hazebrough'.
