With all this talk about support with weapons and expertise being
supplied, am I the only person wondering why the Ukrainian president has
not picked up the phone and had a chat with Kabul?

After all, the Afghans have a good record against the USSR (Mujhardine
(sp?)) and USA "+ plus rest of the world" (Taliban).

The USSR invasion of Afghanistan was over 40 years ago
The USA was damn near 20 years ago, and anyway the only way the
Afghans resisted that was with guerilla tactics - which are very well
understood by military professionals
Most significantly, when you say 'pick up the phone to Kabul' - who do
you think they should speak to? Do you think the Taliban have a
Ministry of Defense, and a general in overall command? Do you even
think there is an Afghan army anymore?

They didn't.

Trump had agreed a timetable to extract the troops with an expectation that
the Afghani government/security services/forces would take over.

Biden followed the timetable set (even though IMO it was clearly falling apart).
The troops didn't leave because they were forced out though, they left for
domestic political reasons.

This. The US could have stayed forever, spending more and more money and
accomplishing nothing. As we saw when they pulled out, all that money
did nothing but make a few corrupt politicians richer. Some day,
hopefully, Afghanis will learn their situation is up to themselves.
I'm not optimistic. Hell, benevolence and charity is falling apart in
the US. Selfishness is the way now.

I read somewhere, total cost was around 10^12 dollars. I sometimes
wonder if simply dishing out 25 000 to every man, woman, child in the
country would have been a simpler option.

You'd need a functioning government for that to happen.

Some thugs would take it off the naive, the gullible and the weak,
then fight among themselves for what was left.

Bit like Russia, except without the mineral wealth.
