Several problems with that. One, they might have a very nice home which
would be hard to replace as a migrant. 2. In many of those countries,
women have no rights at all. 3. As has been said, dispensing any aid has
to go through corrupt local leadership.

Migrating to a foreign country where you'd have to learn a new language,
different customs, etc, is a traumatic experience. Doing it as a woman
unaccustomed to making major decisions must be even more so.

A government that only stays in power because it has armed forces from
another country supporting it isn't that stable. It only had a half-life
of 2 days or so, so it was more stable than Sodium-24 but less stable
than Iodine-131.

I've never been sure to be fair. For me the Jury's out on that one.

She visited our school in around 1984 iirc and no one knew who she was (well classmates at least, obviously not the very excited English teacher who showed her around).

We were forced to sit in the hall and listen to her witty prose. It could have been Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings for all I cared.

In this context, it means independent of the former Soviet era Party
trade unions.

Lenin was not a great fan of independent trade unions - he felt they
were more interested in industrial matters rather than the Party.
