operating systems in that time, most of which you have likely never

What do you think of modern tech stuff? Lots of the newer stuff aren't
good since they're so buggy and bloated to me. And privacy invasive. :(

As far as I'm concerned, there word "modern" in a sentence like that
is meaningless. Regardless of whether they're new or old, some pieces
of software are very good, some are very bad, and most are somewhere
in between.

Each piece of software should be judged on its own merits, without
regard to its age.

I suspect that is how Mayayana deciphered it. Personally, I don't have
the entire ASCII code memorized, I keep track of the codes for all of
the upper and lower case characters and the digits. ASCII is basically
an 8-bit code. On the other hand, 000A is the hexadecimal
representation for the "Two's Complement" 16 bit binary representation
of the decimal number 10.
When you enter 10 into a text field, then when the value is stored as an
integer, it will be stored using logical bits which are "on" or "off" in
accordance with the 0s and 1s in the string 0000000000001010, which is
(obviously) expressed, for people, more succinctly as 000A using
hexadecimal notation, each 4 bits corresponding to 1 hex digit. Now if
the string is stored in memory than it's address varies between
different types of machines.

Extra Credit: What terms are used to distinguish these different types
of (byte addressable) memory systems? This seemingly innocuous detail
increases in importance in computer networking!

P.S. I don't claim to be an expert. All of the above is just "second
year" stuff, except for my final comment pertaining to networking. I
hope we all had fun with it! : )

P.S.S. I'm not sure one can even decode user privileges in Linux without
being familiar with hexadecimal notation. So, it is relevant there. It
also appears in the Windows registry, for instance.

credit" label too seriously, I think a lot of people have a fond
remembrance of their school days. I tried to be informative for the sake

ASCIIcat. I've had a copy for many years and keep a shortcut
in Quick Launch to the HLP file. It's by R. E. Harvey. Has a reference
for ANSI character codes, country codes, weights and measures.
Very simple and very useful. But I wasn't able to find a download
online currently.

Yes, I remember trudging there quite regularly, even in deep snow!
I look back at at all of that fondly.
I took it upon myself to learn "xedit" rather than to use the card
reader--the dumb terminals were in the same room, and that's what the
more senior students were using.
