They might have been immune from the blast, but not from the radiation. We all know from old science fiction movies what the radiation does : for instance, it changes grasshoppers to make them 20 feet tall. But for the radiation to turn them into ash trees is highly unbelievable. A pecan tree I would understand.

Once during my excursions to the American West , I was hiking the Three Sisters mountains near Deming, and an elderly couple saw me hiking along with my Walkingstick, which I made from the stalk of a sotol plant, they said that reminded them of Caine hiking in the TV show , and I responded that no , I don't have that wisdom , I wish I did.
