We used to have those in the 60s. I remember my mother saying "If they
ever leak, don't drink that water. It's filthy water from Hong Kong!"

I drink water in restaurants, same as at home.

I was so happy when we got our first icemaker. No more fiddling with
half-a-dozen ice cube trays, slopping water around, etc.

There is big money to be made in the sale of soft drinks. You can
understand why they usually have exclusive contracts. You'd be hard
pressed to find a place that offered Coke and Pepsi. I don't know about
the equipment, whether it is bought or leased and who is responsible for
maintenance. They also have to buy the CO2 to aerate the product. There
are a lot of other costs, like the rent, labour, insurance, cups, ice
etc, but there is still that enormous markup that very few products can
get away with. Then there is bottled water.

"Slopping water around"... I'm starting to wonder how much ice these
people are consuming. Keep them away from the North Pole. It's already
shrinking!

I last used a couple of ice cubes to provide steam inside a dutch oven
when baking sourdough using Lahey'/NYT method. It was to see if I could
get the shine on the crust that commercial bakeries achieve. It didn't
work.
Before that I dumped a trayful into the gaburator to clean it.
No need for an ice maker in this house.

Diluting the whiskey can be a good thing. I always remember the advice
given to Mary Richards by Lou Grant when he tells her how to drink
scotch. You get a nice glass and a nice bottle of Scotch. You put a few
ice cubes in a glass and pour in a good shot of whiskey. Swirl it around
a bit and take a sip. After a while you swirl it some more and take
another sip. Then when the the ice has melted the right amount you knock
it back. Then pour yourself another drink.

Japan artist of the day: the exquisite Shiina Ringo. In 1999 she produced her first rock CD when she was 20. Throughout the years she has evolved. Along the way, she has changed the sound of contemporary Japanese music.
