Soccer because it's the world's most popular sport. Mackerel isn't as
popular as salmon or tuna in Europe, for instance. Multi-national song
contests because non-Americans are able to look further than their own
country and because gays have a right to entertainment too.

I am not all that keen on drinking extremely cold water and especially
not large amounts of it. Our summer temperatures don't get anywhere
near as hot as Texas.

LOL You sound like Sheldon! He was always going off about ice makers.
First thing to break! Al you need is ice cube trays!

Ed's icemaker notwithstanding, the circa 1987 GE side by side
refrigerator freezer with an in the door ice maker/water dispenser my
parents owned never once broke. The whole unit did eventually die but
it was not a problem with the ice maker. The problem was they didn't
make the parts for the refrigerator or freezer anymore.

I do drink ice water (8 oz glass several times a day) and take a thermos
of ice water to work. But I never run out of ice from my ice maker.

*One* metal ice cube tray?! I remember those things. Mom had them
stacked in the top freezer. Best to run the base under water so the ice
cubes release easily. I would not go back to using those things if you
paid me.

Nope:

https://draftmag.com/do-germans-drink-warm-beer

For years many people have wondered, “Do Germans drink warm beer?” due to a prevailing myth that has its roots in the 17th Century. The accurate answer is both “Yes” and “No” because, though the Germans don’t drink warm beer, there are seasons in which the Germans prefer warm beer to cold ales.

Warm beer was not only a thing in Germany as history proves that countries England and even the US enjoyed their beers served at room temperature. These suds were consumed at any time of the day and during any season of the year.

and calcium in it. completely fine to me to drink.
no filter needed at all.

so not works on this well nor wanted or needed.

the time when i was into marine aquariums i did
run an RO unit to get good quality water without

I own three of them, and while I don't use a lot of ice, those metal
trays are used. No flimsy plastic here for me. You'd lose your mind if
we switched houses. I more or less have a living museum here.

I rarely use ice. Sometimes at home, but if at a restaurant, I ask for
"light" or "no" ice. If I'm paying for a drink, I'm not going to pay to
have it padded out with ice.

Sheldon was correct. Your exception aside, most ice makers are the most
faulty part of a refrigerator. It's amazing how much extra electricity
an ice maker uses, also. Some models report twice the energy
consumption (for the entire fridge) due to the ice maker.

Many years ago, my sister 'interned' (read 'provided free labour') at a
summer stock theatre at the Jersey shore.
One of the many tasks assigned to the interns, was selling refreshments
to the audience. The guy who ran the company told them to fill the
tumblers with ice before pouring in the soda. 'Soda's expensive, you
know...'

Our first refrigerator, in our first apartment, came with an ice maker.
We never bothered to connect it.

My daughter bought an ice mold that makes large spheres of ice. As a boomer, I'm fully vested in not understanding the concept.

Japan fact of the day

marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2023/11/japan-fact-of-the-day-

by Tyler Cowen November 14, 2023 at 3:19 am in Travel

"People make a lot of the fact that Americans don’t travel a lot (43% have passports) but I’m not sure people realise how massive that is compared to Japan, where only 21.7m people now have passports, not even a fifth of the country.

My initial reaction was surprise too - the Japanese tourists are still there if you know where to look. I went to Harvard in the late 2000's and every day several busloads of Japanese tourists arrived to walk and photograph all the major campus landmarks.

They all had very nice cameras and took pictures of everything. On nice days I would eat lunch outside near something they liked taking pictures of and chuckle to myself at the idea that I was part of some Japanese guy's photo album.

Then somebody explained it to me: in fact, the reason Japanese tourists are so conspicuous and take photos of everything is because Japanese travel so rarely that when they do, they make a big deal out of it. My guess is that it also helps that Japan is home to the world's best camera companies..."

It's the mathematics of the shapes and the relative mass, volume and
surface area and how it changes as the ice melts.

Many years ago, an architect friend was designing the cafeteria at a new
university. He told me that the profit margin on Coke was close to 1000%.
That was based on the syrup cost and the amount of water needed to make
it up.

It is good if you are sipping a good bourbon. Cools, but with less
dilution that a bunch of cubes. I have a similar contraption and I heat
the water first, then the ball is clear and melts even slower.
