I always figure that optional gizmos are likely to fail at some point so
I never got an ice maker. I have never seen much need for an ice maker
when I can just fill up some ice cube trays and stick them into the
freezer.

I had to have my shower valve replaced a few years ago. There was an
access panel on the other side of the wall but I had to remove the
vanity counter top and cut out a bit of the dry wall for the plumber to
access it.

You must not use very much ice. We go through the entire output
of the ice maker plus and 8-pound bag of ice every week.

There always seems to be a trace of 'freezer' smell for me.
I always buy the bags at the grocery / corner store,
and it usually lasts a few weeks. I do not use a lot;
I have a water cooler that takes the big bottles.

I don't. My wife and I usually have a drink before dinner and use a half
dozen cubes. I usually fill the tray back up before putting it back.
It's not a problem, so no reason to pay for an option that might break down.

Access panel, but no other valve. Usually you don't even have an
access panel. The access panel is "installed" (cut out) the first
time you need to work on it from behind.

The water is simply shut off at the main to your home or
apartment.

i found out i didn't like ice in my drinks at all
because it is rare to have any that doesn't taste
odd.

if i want something cold the refridgerator is
cold enough but for drinks more often than not it
is tap water which is pretty cold as it is.

Basically. There was a panel on the wall on which the vanity was
mounted. I could access a lot of the plumbing, but the shower valve was
just a little too high.

I have a water shut offs accessible in that space and I have shutoffs in
the basement where the pipes go up the the bathroom. Then there is the
main shutoff by the water pressure system.

Yes, that is what was done in ancient times. Ice Makers are the most
likely part of a refrigerator to break, but I'm willing to pay for the
convenience up front and I'll pay again for the repair.

My oven has electronic ignition, no need to use a match any more.

The next thing I know you're going to be trying to tell me that you can
touch something on your wall and the lights come on.

It's my husband. His idea of a beverage is to take a 32-ounce glass,
fill it with ice, then displace the air with water. Repeat several
times per day.

I have replaced my ice maker. A kit costs less than a hundred bucks. I am going to replace the water line because it was old and it's disconnected anyway. Not only did those "plumbers" disconnect my line, they also removed the tee fitting on the supply line. That's so disrespectful!

I thought you only have to look at a drink to cool it down a lot. Just
pretend it's your mother.

Americans are used to having as much ice as they can get their greedy, pudgy. fingers on. When we were in the UK, it was a fight to get a few more cubes of ice in a glass. Asking for a glass full of ice would be horrifying to those people across that pond. I'm pretty sure the Brits would have given us a glass full of ice if we insisted. Of course, they'd spit in the glass first. "Stupid yanks - patooie!"
Pro travel tip: If you go to the UK, be sure to pack your own ice - you're going to need it.

I should have left you with one of my aluminum 50's ice cube trays with
the pull-up handles. Grandma couldn't wait to get rid of those when
grandpa passed away in 2009. Being a "normal" 14 year old, I saved
them. Well, they come in handy sometimes!

When I get a drink out of the fridge, it's already cold. Apparently,
Americans want it colder. I can't believe all the ice making angst
lately in RFC.

I certainly can - Americans love ice. Why is that? I don't know but that hardly matters. Non-Americans love soccer, mackerel, and multi-national song contests. Why is that? It hardly matters.

They were handy some time back. I thought of buying a couple of trays
but I'll just tough it out a few more days.

It does seem to be an American thing. I know more people who complain
about having too much ice than too little. Most of the time I rarely
bother with ice in water. Straight out of the tap is fine for me.
Restaurants tend to load up soft drinks with ice because it is cheaper
than the the drink, be it a soft drink or a mixed drink.

Asking for a glass full of

They are the same way about cold beer. Most American beer is served
really cold. Many of the good beers in Europe are made to be consumed at
room temperature.

Do tough it out Ed. You will earn yourself a Tshirt.

At night, yes. During the day, he drinks it quickly enough that
it's not a problem.
