The original "Plimsoll mark" was a circle with a horizontal line through
it to show the maximum draft of a ship. Additional marks have been added
over the years, allowing for different water densities and expected sea
conditions.

Letters may also appear to the sides of the mark indicating the
classification society that has surveyed the vessel's load line. The
initials used include AB for the American Bureau of Shipping, BV for
Bureau Veritas, VL for DNV GL, IR for the Indian Register of Shipping,
LR for Lloyd's Register, NK for Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and RI for the
Registro Italiano Navale. These letters are approximately 115
millimetres in height and 75 millimetres in width (4.5 by 3.0 in).[9]
The load line length is referred to during and following load line
calculations.

The letters on the load line marks have the following meanings:

TF – tropical fresh water
F – fresh water
T – tropical seawater
S – summer temperate seawater
W – winter temperate seawater
WNA – winter North Atlantic

When the floor was last repaired, before I bought the house, the
tongue-and-grouve join was cut and not supported by noggins. All now
corrected.

Where did you put your test you want me to complete?

Ah, that sounds familiar. I think that could get complicated. Simple enough going into salt water, but temperature.... the density of the water changes, but so does the ship! A ship in tropical water will also be warmer along with the surrounding water.

I dislike tongue and groove, it makes things creak. I always use seperate pieces of wood.

I though a noggin was your head/brain. I assume you mean supported by bugger all?

Not sure how much the ship getting warmer would affect bouyancey , but the plimsoll line is for use at port rather than while travelling.
And unless it's a sailing shiop then the fuel used would lighten the weight of the ship during the voyage, this would also apply to sailing ships as the crew went through the food stocks.

Hadn't thought about the subject much at all, but it makes sense. I suspect that another thing
to keep in mind is that these are basically safety ratings, so there can be factors other than
merely the strict physics of water density which determine them.

For example, I see that WNA is listed ... this region became even more notorious during WW2 for
having rough seas, which could call for a ship to run with greater freeboard, and it also was known
for heavy winter ice on superstructures (risk) which adds weight (and instability), which requires
less cargo while being loaded in port in order to maintain safety margins, etc.

I must have missed this question!

The links to the videos may all be found in the 'rec.photo.digital'
