My understanding is that Quayle was just a celebrity spokes mouth. He
didn’t make the call about it being misspelled, one of the actual judges
did. Quayle just repeated the ruling.

I don't remember that but I don't remember much about Quayle other than
he had the brains of a quail.

He's lucky he made it out of Ireland alive after THAT particular
blooper! (And shouldn't plan on visiting New Zealand any time soon
since down there the All Blacks are AT LEAST as popular as the Dallas
Cowboys in America)

Sounds like the sort of reception Reagan got in Ireland back in the
day. The Irish are prone to lionize any US president with a drop of
Irish blood....Canada's Brian Mulroney got the same treatment back in
the day.

That as well is a horrible blunder - he can't even excuse himself with
jet lag between Washington and Ottawa - they're both Eastern Standard
Time!

I can't imagine being related to one of the victims and hearing the
president say that.

Actually that incident probably prevented a Quayle presidential bid -
having a meme that you're stupid is electoral poison.

Politically as long as you're not convicted (like Agnew - or was that
a plea bargain?) suspicion of crooked behaviour is a LOT more
forgiveable than being dumb - Nixon overcame the allegation that he
had profitted from being vice-president - and he overcame it with a
speech about his wife's "Republican cloth coat" and their children's
puppy Checkers (which was a gift from a supporter)

Hey in Canada Pierre Trudeau survived dropping the F-bomb in the House
of Commons (he only mouthed it not said it into the microphone. The
Toronto Globe + Mail reported it as "the prime minister told the
honorable member to go forth and multiply") while his successor John
Turner got away with groping a prominent female member of his party on
national TV and when challenged said that he was 'a tactile
politician'!

You do realize that all of this is in the context of the current
Democrat presidenbt saying 10 times the number of stupid things Quayle
ever did just this month, right?

And let's not forget his vice president who was slack-jawed and reduced
to giggles over the idea of a battery-powered school bus.

There you go. Flashcards. Our ancient enemy.

I’ve seen it claim that it was a legitimate alternate spelling right up to
the instant that Dan Quayle made the headlines using it. But I have no idea
how you prove it unless you’ve got a hard copy of an old dictionary around.

Remember all the constant speculation about Reagan's mental state and
all the SNL and late night jokes we got about it?

Compare that to what we get with Biden, who is obviously much more far
gone than Reagan was when he was still in office.

LOL! I've been called a lot of things in my life, but "Quayle partisan"
has to be a first. (And who knew that all it takes to make one a "Quayle
partisan" is merely bringing Quayle up in comparison to the media's
kid-glove treatment of Biden?)

No, you don't. You're absolutely right. Which is kinda the whole point.

The difference being people that didn't watch those shows didn't get
those jokes. It's one huge difference today when even one small
mistake can get blown up on social media.

Or not. While I don't see Biden as being as sharp as he was 30-40
years ago I don't see him as heading into senility which Reagan
clearly was. Though it's one of the possible consequences we get from
electing people who are closer to the end of their life than the
beginning.

Whether people got the jokes isn't the point. It was the media's and
Hollywood's willingness to *make* the jokes about Reagan while
tip-toeing around Biden that's the point.

One guy had (R) after his name, the other has (D). That's all the info
you need to determine why they're treated so differently.

You've got to be kidding me. He sees dead people in the audience. He
turns around to shake hands with people who aren't there. Hell, just
read the article that started this thread to see the senility on full
display.

Such 'whataboutism' seems to suggest that the stark magnitude and
circumstance of Quayle's gaffe is routinely equaled. I disagree.

X-Subject: Democrat Says America Can't Survive Without Illegal Aliens Filling Cleaning Lady Jobs
 by: Ubiquitous - Thu, 20 Apr 2023 16:36 UTC

Leftist Democrat Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) said Wednesday that the U.S. needs
amnesty for millions of illegal aliens because they do things such as clean
our homes and pick our food. Without them, America would be doomed, she
argued.

Her comments were made during a Congressional House hearing on border
security, and she seemed rather concerned that if the U.S. ever did seal its
southern border and stop the never-ending flow of illegal aliens, then every
manual labor job in the country would suffer big-time.

So lets all take a minute to recognize the hypocrisy of every anti-
immigrant debate, Jayapal said while arguing for amnesty, according to Fox
News. This country needs immigrants to survive. Immigrants pick the food we
eat, rebuild our communities after climate disasters, help construct our
infrastructure, power our small business economy, clean our homes, and look
after the most precious in our families our children and our elders.

As the conservative advocacy group FreedomWorks put it, Jayapal using the
tired old, Who will clean our homes? defense on illegal immigration.
Limousine liberalism at its finest!

?? Jayapal using the tired old, "Who will clean our homes?" defense

pic.twitter.com/LBMe4jrmxO

 FreedomWorks (@FreedomWorks) April 19, 2023

Indeed, Americans have heard that argument before. Former Speaker of the
House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) made a similar statement last year after Florida
Republican Governor Ron DeSantis sent a few dozen illegal immigrants to
lily-white liberal vacation spot Marthas Vineyard.

We have a shortage of workers in our country, and you see even in Florida,
some of the farmers and the growers saying: Why are you shipping these
immigrants up north? We need them to pick the crops down here, Pelosi said.

So in other words, both Pelosi and Jayapal supposed defenders of Americas
working class want millions of foreign nationals imported so that their
donors can have cheap labor. Its the exact same reason that Republican
Establishment-aligned organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce want
massive amnesty as well.

Unfortunately, certain believers of Washington Republicanism want a
bipartisan version of pathway to citizenship which is the used-car
salesmans term for amnesty just as Pelosi and Jayapal want as well.

All that will do is drive down wages for Americans, particularly minorities,
who would fill those jobs instead.

Those things were already debunked. Like the turning around being a
question of which way did they want him to leave the stage. I get that
you hate Biden's policies but at least attack the man on legitimate
gripes and not things that were made up for social media. Hate to
imagine what it would have been like if we had Twitter/Facebook back
in the Carter/Reagan days.

More like spun as best they could. And not very credibly.

I saw the footage with my own eyes. It wasn't made up.
