i almost forgot about these two:

* "being human" (uk version):
this started off great, but as the seasons progressed the actors started
leaving and were replaced with inferiors. when the actor who played
"john mitchell" left to star in peter jackson's "hobbit" film everyone
could read the writing on the wall.

* "misfits" (uk show):
the quality literally nosedived right after sheehan left to do other
projects.
his replacement "rudy" was awful.

In the late first season, there was an episode set in the future, and it
was fantastic. Then they backpedaled from it, and didn't do anything
that good again. This showed me that they knew how to do something
really good, but they were making a conscious choice not to, because
they liked something else better, something that left me much less
impressed. I stopped watching after three eps. into the second season.

Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've gotten more ruthless
about cutting the dead weight loose. There's so much content out there
now with more to come that I'm much less forbearing of downturns in
quality, or even of new shifts in plot or character that don't engage
me. I thought that the first season of _House MD_ was terrific, because
while House was a jerk, he was always a jerk for a reason. By the
second season, the creators realized it was simply the jerk part that
the viewers were responding to. I stayed with it into, I think, the
third season, but gave up when even a teenage stranger could lecture
House with the authorial voice about what was wrong with him.

I liked both Doyle and Wesley, and can make allowances for trying not to
make things harder on an actor undergoing a bad time. I was originally
unforgiving of J. Michael Straczynski for pretending like he hadn't
reworked the pilot to _Babylon 5_ to make it look like he had planned
for Michael O'Hare to exit after the first season all along. After I
learned why O'Hare left, though, I gained some respect for Straczynski
protecting O'Hare. I'm now more tolerant of creative collaborators
shielding one another's privacy. Such things aren't really our
business.

What does one have to do with the other? Yes, Michael O'Hare was allowed
to retire prematurely with some measure of privacy, but Kosh greeting
Sinclair as Valen in the re-edited pilot episode was outrageous. That
had zilch to do with protecting O'Hare's privacy and there's no reason
for you to claim otherwise.

Nothing in the pilot's original edit precluded Sinclair from becoming
Valen if O'Hare hadn't been forced to retire.

Generally, I preferred the pilot episode's original edit to the edit for
TNT. I liked the original score and thought they shouldn't have replaced
it. I do agree that there were way too many commercial breaks. However,
it was just bizarre that, even though it was intended for a 120-minute
time slot, it wasn't edited to be readily shown in two hour-long parts
in second run syndication.

Similarly, I thought it was outrageous that In the Beginning gave
spoilers for the huge revalation about Delenn's direct guilt for war
between humans and Minbari which wouldn't come till season 4. A viewer
new to Babylon 5 at the time might have thought that watching an episode
titled "In the Beginning" should be watched first.

Man Still Basking in Glow of Never Getting Sucked into That Show LOST

PAMPA, TX — Local man Jameson Leeds continues to revel in never getting duped
into watching that show LOST, unlike so many suckers around him.

"Those poor fools," laughed Mr. Leeds, chuckling. "Man, this feeling of
superiority - it just doesn't quit!"

Mr. Leeds said he still fondly recalls friends obsessively talking about LOST
being the greatest show in human history, only to watch their passion steadily
devolve into humiliating disappointment. "Their fandom was like watching a
slow-motion train wreck for five straight years, and it was glorious," said
Mr. Leeds. "They started off a happy little club of nerds, chanting some
number sequence that they were sure would one day mean something awesome.
Then, one by one each of them realized they had been hoodwinked. I still can't
stop smiling about it."

Though ultimately proved wiser and smarter than all of his friends, Mr. Leeds
admitted there were times he second-guessed his decision. "I'm not going to
lie, my friends worshipped that show so neurotically that I was tempted to try
it on a couple of occasions. Then one day I saw a trailer for the new season,
and some guy who had apparently escaped the island dramatically yelled, 'We
have to go back!'. Oh man, I knew I had dodged a bullet."

At publishing time, a giggling Mr. Leeds was continuing his quarterly
tradition of messaging his friends to ask them how they felt about the LOST
finale.
