Yes. It's always been one of the things I like about it - we each have
power over what we read, but not over what other people say

'power', that is, as opposed to the possibility of persuasion etc. We
can try to convince people, we can't compel them (unless they believe
we can)

And no Algorithms to blame things on.

Ferzackerly. If somesheddy posts summat you don't want to read, don't read
it, innit.

In Xnews there is the option to plonk freds as well as people (maybe in
other news readers too - I dunno). So if somesheddy I don't want to plonk
choses to post summat about sbbgonyy (warning - only sheddies of a strong
constitution should unrot that worm) I could choose to not read that fred
rather than not reading everything thatsheddy posts. (Though I would be
pretty dismayed if anyone here *did* post on that topic).

Unless you make or sell XLR connectors, where a male has pins and can be
a socket.

https://cpc.farnell.com/neutrik/nc3mpr-hd/xlr-male-socket-3p-panel/dp/AV15762

Or maybe it could be an ungendered plug.

https://cpc.farnell.com/neutrik/nc3mdl1/neutrik-xlr-panel-plug-3-way/dp/CN07178

I assume that if it has a gender, male has pins and female has orifices,
and that overrides "plug" or "socket", so a male plug has pins and a
male socket has pins, but the male socket will probably be panel
mounting. And it's always useful with XLR connectors to remember that
the pins point in the direction of the signal flow.

Que? The pins are on the microphone and the holes are on the amplifiers
here, so the pins point against the signal flow in the same way as a
mains plug works. (Except that phantom power goes the other way.)

XLR pins are, however, inside a shrouded connector "plug", and the holes
are set into an otherwise flush end of the "socket"

There are pins sticking out of the back of the microphone - signal
emerges from them, there are holes in the microphone end of the cable -
signal enters them, there are pins on the mixer end of the cable -
signal emerges from them, there are holes in the mixer - signal enters them.

At least that's what I have in the music room.

If I had the energy, I might think about getting in on the ground floor
with a range of rainbowcoloured non-binary connectors ...

Fortunately, I don't.
