Vista and 2000 were never popular

Windows 2000 was based on NT and saw use in the *professional* arena.
Windows ME, it's *home use* counterpart, was based on DOS. Windows ME
and 2000 were stop gap until XP (also based on NT) was released in 2001.
XP came in two flavours to cover the professional and home markets.
Windows 2000 was never meant to be popular. Vista was a crock of shit.
Speaking of that, I seem to recall having a sealed and unused copy of
Vista OEM around here. Must have a look.

The wife and I both use 8.1. Won't go to 10 untill 8.1 support (read:
security fixes) ends. Too much hassle, too little control, no advantages
(at least not for me).

**You're dreaming. The PC operating system was OS/2, followed by Windows
2000. Windows XP was, basically, Win2k, with more automation.

Still, if OS/2 had made it in the marketplace.....

Yep, the only real difference was in the desktop environment. The
underlying XP OS was the same as Win2k.

OS/2 died because it was marketed wrongly by *IBM*. They wanted to wrest
back control of the PC OC market. They failed.

OS/2 was OK I installed it in all the machines in the operation that I
was working in at the time for 2 reasons, it was better at multi-tasking
than Win 3.11, and it was on special at Harvey Norman at $9.50 a copy.
We used it in Windows compatible mode.

We used Win2k at the college for a time. No problems at all, especially
if you had previously used Win NT3.5 or Win NT4.0, as I had.

I have both Win 7 and Win10 comps here. Don't use the Win10 much except
t archive my email and the Win7 not at all. The world moves on and so did I.
