On Friday I drove Brighton - Westbury and nearly accidentally joined
the queue from the petrol station that had backed up onto the dual
carriageway - twice.

I think they did - that's part of the problem...

Part of the problem, the main part is they've made it such a shit job
no-one wants to do it.

Everything being cheap comes at a cost.

1st house was circa 1985.

Sold for £23000 in 1989.

2nds house, 3 bed semi. (1989) £42500

1st house I was on about £7500, but could make it to £9500 with over time.

2nd house I was on £12500, no over time. Jean did bar work and then
child minding to get us through.

Then I made my 1st step up to EKS for 4.5 years before Sun brought me
back down to earth for a while.

First flat 1988, one bed, £74500.
Downstairs sold theirs after a year for £52k.
Sold eventually in 2000 for £104k

House 4 bed terrace. 1999. £153k
4 bed is a bit of a con.
One bedroom has a desk and the computers in it, another has two
wardrobes and a chest of drawers.

Ditto, except, and this is the madness that is London:

£827-£914k

For the first four years we lived here, the house "earned" more than
we did.

Six houses, in a row, all bought in Feb 1999, same owners.

I'm keen to release some equity and go a bit rural, but I'm in a
minority.

I've only ever bought one house (technically twice, once in partnership with
my parents, I didn't live in it for many years, renting places as I moved around.
Then when Mum died I bought my Dad's half at the going rate). I still live in it,
and expect to leave it for the final time feet first.

Well, two houses but same here about feet first, or maybe head first, who knows.

Occasionally I think about moving but then I think about emptying two garages,
three sheds, part of a barn, part of a nissin hut, two greenhouses, the attic... and
then feel a little tired and need to sit down.

Mentioning feet first. My grandfather (mother's side) was a farmer but in his younger
days also helped out an undertaker from time to time. On one of these times, the
deceased was in a bedroom at the top of a set of spiral stairs. After some thinking
it was agreed the only way of getting the deceased down was slinging them over
someone's shoulder and carrying them down the narrow spiral stairs like that.

My grandfather did the carrying. Part way down I guess the movement caused
'things' to get a little lively and the corpse farted (while on my grandfather's
shoulder), his view was 'if the dirty bugger had enough life in him to do that,
he had enough life in him to walk down on his own'...

Can't say I blame them. I *don't* want to live in the current version of england
for them it must be so much worse. I've seen this tale repeated elsewhere. All
things being equal I am thinking of selling my UK gaff and using the capital as
an adjunct to my pensions.

Made me look. £27k in 1983 last sold in 2005 for £205k but is being estimated at
£350k. I was an impecunious technician I have a vague recollection of bringing
home just over £100 a week, the ex was working in a double glazing shop. Looks
like T2A is ~£28k or so now.

To go rural would not be an equity release for me.

Actually, daft thing is, St Helens is near as damn rural. We are 10 mins
from farm fields and many paths. With pubs. Saturday was a 7 mile and 2
pub walk.

It has so many upsides[1] here that it often cancels out thoughts of moving.

We do. It's *almost* big enough to put a car in.

Several have been converted to an additional downstairs room. Some by
simple erecting a wall of blocks behind the door, others by doing it

Even in Kent, I could get a substantial property for 75% of the value
of this place. As it stands, it's not really ours, we're just living
in it until our nieces and nephews get it.

Everywhere is reachable from the bus stop 100m away. The DLR is 300m.
ASDA's walkable, as is the doctors. Also, I'll have a free Oyster card
in eight weeks. Anywhere on TfL's network, for free.

If you're in the minority in a house of two occupants, I think you're going to have to re-think your posting name...

I'd love my parents to move from the fairly drab little town in which they live - I have visions of a cute little village in Dorset or Devon. But the same themes are true for them: local Dr is 100m away, local supermarket same distance in a different direction, bus stop 50m away, train to town 750m..

Oh, never had a car in it. A previous owner used 1/3 of it for the
kitchen (another reason we bought the house).

Record has been 7 motorbikes. But i feel 3 is a bit more manageable.

I've resorted buying MZ parts from a Polish geezer based in the UK - I
suspect he smuggles them in.

I do hope he has a beard and a parrot.

Think so, but I could be mistaken..... I could just be unremembering incorrectly, I just knew I didn't like him from when he did a thing, then many other things. Then he was a dick about those things he did.

Probably many feel the same way about me, but I'll be honest and hold my hands up to being a cnut sometimes - never try and deny it - that's my policy.

I don't think he is or was a Brexiteer. Indeed, he seems to admire the work
ethic of the many East Europeans operating sites selling his employer's
products.

He lost the plot over Covid and left here after you challenged him over
putting his bonus before Covid deaths.

I last saw him when he collected his Benelli TRK502X from my local
motorcycle shop (Spa M/c formerly Skellerns).

Not long after that he unfriended me on Facebook as I assume he saw some of
the comments I had made poking fun at him.

Odd chap, especially his online presence. Hardly unusual where UKRM is
concerned.
