It doesn't work like that here.

I came back from the railway station to my house and passed four petrol
stations - only one had petrol (but no diesel) and was open (the others
had cones blocking entry and yellow clips on the pumps), and,
surprisingly not a queue.

Filled up the bike - just as well as it wasn't far off fuel light time.

I suspect it (delivery problems) isn't over just yet.

Obviously there's a north/south divide involved, it really has been back to
normal around notts/leics/lincs for at least a week ...

I did see one motorway gantry sign this week that the services by east midlands
airport had no diesel at the car pumps.

Norfolk and Cambridgeshire are still having issues;
Plenty of completely closed stations and those that are open tend not to
have diesel. Not many queues though.

Yeah, the whole North/South dividing line idea is dodgy. If it exists
at all it's flexible and sometimes dotted. It's only ever referenced ,
usually in economic terms, but sometimes cultural and/or liguistic as
well, by those who don't live anywher near their imagined line.

Growing up in Derby, the North started at the Yorkshire border,
Sheffield being North, but Chesterfield, in Derbyshire, not Nonrth. So
no question, I am not a Northerner. Then again, all the Southerners
talk funny, can't pronouce their grass, bath and bastard properly, so
I'm definitely not a Southerner.

Does the same attitude apply to all the aforementioned counties, I
wonder?

I don't know but I grew up in Nottingham, which I always felt (and still
feel) is 'midlands'. Like you I felt that the north started at the
Yorkshire border BUT having spent my teenage years in Worksop (Notts)
that was most definitely 'north'. Therefore, I now think the 'north'
line should be drawn across Notts somewhere between Warsop (pronounced
'Worsup') and Worksop (pronounced 'Wassup').
I do agree that about the divide being between Chesterfield and
Sheffield across Derbyshire though. Mynde Ewe, that is where the
boundary is anyway :-)
As for Lincolnshire, I was in Louth the other week and that seems to be
neither midlands nor, most defintely, NOT north. So, regarding Grimsby &
Immingham too, I think the Humber is the border to the east and yet
Scunthorpe is definitely northern.
Maybe we could draw a UKRM border map?
:-)

How about the East/West divide?

The Pennines is too logical a thing to use.

NIn Newmarket, whici is a sort of Suffolk Pseudopod into
Cambridgeshire, was OK this evening. I managed to fill two 5L plastic
petrol cans without problems; no queue at all.

I was born in That London, grew up in Solihull (just to the south-east
of Birmingham) and now live in Tamworth (north-east of Birmingham) so
definitely a Midlander. I regard the Liverpool to Hull conurbation as
the border of the North (the bit where it's fucking impossible to find a
decent north-south road and you have to resort to motorway).

As everyone knows, Balham is the Gateway to the South.
