The Zener which is part of the regulation circuit of the board shorts,
(this causes the initial telltale ignition stumble. The load resistor
gets hot to the point of failure or it desolders itself. Once the
resistor drops out the circuit is receiving unregulated voltage which
can be anything from 12 to close to 15V) well beyond it's design spec.
The MOSFET fails as a result. When a coil field collapses it sends a
back EMF through the circuit and at that point through a combination of
heat, component failure and a surge voltage way beyond what the circuit
is designed to handle causes several components to fail. A capacitor
subjected to such heat and likely pushed beyond it's design tolerance
can certainly fail unpredictably.
