You have a problem with having a very fragile ego. If anybody dares to
disagree with your view, then you go off your rocker.

"Instant expert"? Having spent over 50 years in the subject that you
claim to be expert in, hardly "Instant".

> The only person who is convinced of your superiority is you!

I think that the employers who paid me a six figure salary to be an
expert would disagree with that. With your qualifications and
experience, you might be able to get an entry level job driving round in
a van full of parts to replace the items that somebody like me told you to.

Hahahaha :)

Have to take my hat off to you here. That was one of the best "arse
handings" we've seen around here in some time :)

Well that's about it for clockys "Theory" about a failing zener
overheating it's "Load resistor" (not a term used in professional
electronics). There is only one place that the resistor found in the
bottom of the dizzy could have come from and that is R22. R22 as can be
seen in one of the original pictures is connected between pin 3 of the
MOSFET and ground nowhere near any zeners or the power supply input.
R23, which is in parallel, also has been very hot because it has burned
through the insulation of the orange wire.

We can now see the value of the exploded capacitor 0.01uF 630 volt. So
the capacitor appears to have been correctly specced, and capable of
handling the normal coil back emf. Either it was faulty or it has been
hit with a *lot* of volts. That is reason to suspect a problem with the
coil, a flashover from the secondary winding would do it and it seems to
be a not exactly unknown fault..

I could go into an analysis of the circuit, but most of the action goes
on in the IC which can't be identified from the pictures, and the
marking may even have been removed by the manufacturer anyway (quite a
common practice unfortunately). Anyway most here wouldn't understand it,
and no doubt clocky would try and argue, If he wants to prove his
electronic expertise, then he can give a detailed analysis.

Clocky seems to have fallen into the trap of having seen some report of
zener failure and assumed that it must be the case here, I've seen this
from lazy people in the industry who can't be bothered to check into the
problem properly and just assume some common fault. I've often had to
clean up the mess that they have left.

"six figure salary" in some hyper-inflated currency?

Nah, proving you were a liar with regard to your manifold claims of
trade qualifications and business ownership, now *that's* a real arse
handing. It's why you *ran away* and now *can't* provide *any proof*
whatsoever of your self aggrandising claims.

Indeed, and coat-tailing poor ol' paradox Keith who refuses to answer a
simple question yet goes from clueless to pretending to be an expert -
but only after the fact - trying to pedestal himself as the greatest not
to be outdone.

Then Derro, completely clueless, chimes in - not realising Keith is
bullshitting him and he's fallen for it.

This is comedy gold!

Well, yeah, but to be honest that was a safe bet from the get-go :)

Indeed it did.

No, but as I said earlier the coil tested okay and has been functioning
perfectly fine ever since.

Like I've said previously, don't hold your breath. His standard practice
in situations like these when he realises that the situation has gone
*way* beyond the range of his limited knowledge and he finds himself
completely out of his depth is to turn into Mr Agro and play the man
rather than the ball.

You watch.... :)

> Clocky seems to have fallen into the trap of having seen some report of
> zener failure and assumed that it must be the case here, I've seen this

No doubt you have.

Jerky's "problem", such as it is, is that he has a perpetual need to
show that he knows more about anything than anyone else, and in
situations like this where he *clearly* does not he educates himself to
a *very* limited degree by Googling what he can in the time he has
available than then trying to bluff his way through the rest of the
thread by passing whatever he learned off as his own personal knowledge
while using agro and bluster to fill in the gaps.

Like he has already been doing thus far.

This is not accidental. He does it on purpose because he needs to show
everyone that he's better than anyone else and we've already seen him
mouthing off about how much better he could fix this problem better than
me or anyone else around here. In fact, I'd take a sizeable bet that his
solution to this problem would be to replace the failed components and
return the distributor to it's original state while bragging about how
well he did it.

And if he *did* do that then he would be a bigger fucking *idiot* than
even I can give him credit for being, and you can go to the bank on me
thinking he's a moron :)

The reason why that would be the worst thing you could do is *not*
because it would be a difficult process worth bragging about. You can
buy the damaged components from RS Components online or even pick them
up at any Jaycar store, and the board itself is basic enough that Stevie
Wonder could just about remove and replace the components with a
plumber's soldering iron. The actual repair itself would not be even
remotely difficult. Why it would be stupid to do that is because all
you'd be doing is returning it back to the original shitty design in the
first place. The very one where he claimed in a reply to you was a poor
design that caused the problem to begin with, and the very one where if
you returned it to that state you'd just be waiting for it to fail again.

And again, and again, and again.

Wasn't it Einstein who said stupidity was defined by doing the same
thing over and over and expecting a different result each time? :)

The proper way to repair this cunt of a thing was to do what I did with
it, which was to modify it so the poor design and cheap-arsed components
are removed from the equation and can never cause an issue ever again.
The bonus is that now that the ignition firing is handled by a remotely
mounted HEI module it will no doubt be *far* more reliable given that
HEI chips have been used for decades and have proven their worth, but
the extra added bonus in this case is if the chip ever dies they can be
obtained for 30 bucks and being mounted remotely it's a 10 minute job to
change it. The distributor no longer has to be removed from the engine
and completely dismantled to get to the faulty components.

Win win, and this is the difference in problem solving approach methods
between a bloke who has a shit-tonne of hands on experience and a desk
jockey who *thinks* he does.

I did watch *you* and, yes, you do it every time. Of course, you then

Like you do when you falsely claim to have not one (1), not two (2), but
three (3) apprenticeships under your belt. Also, not one, but two (2)
trade qualifications. Also, just so you could lay claim to *relevance*
in an automotive forum, you claimed to be a motor mechanic *and* an auto
machinist. That's real narcissism for you! Such a pity I spent 20 years
at the college you would have attended if you actually had been
apprenticed in either of those trades. But you never were - you didn't
even meet the entry requirements so you could never have been signed up
for any apprenticeship ever.

I go to the bank thinking you're a moron and, happily, you keep on
proving you are - time after time after time!

Yep, you continually claiming you're a multiple qualified tradesman fits
the bill there. You aren't, you never were, but you think people will
eventually believe you if you bullshit them long enough. Won't work Darren.

The IC isn't going to cause the capacitor to blow up either.

Because it's a common fault with those, obviously I don't have the thing
or the latest photos in front of me. What is absolutely certain is that
*your* theories didn't stack up, that's for sure. I also alluded to
another potential cause which could explain it, one you seem to have
ignored... that the idiot did some welding on it without taking precautions.

That is known to blow the guts out of the distributors - including the
capacitor as I have already stated... and you know how he likes to weld.

It's interesting to watch Keith proclaim himself king as he throws
baseless theories around... and clueless Derro lapping them right up.

No cloggy I don't proclaim myself anything other than someone who knows
a lot more about electronics than you. Nothing baseless about my theory,
it holds a lot more water than your zener one.
