the line that is is regulating to the circuitry will drop to zero volts.
From the pictures it isn't possible to see the regulation circuit but
in https://www.imagebam.com/view/ME4MPQ9?full=1 the +ve power connection
is visible on the right leading to a power diode which looks totally
unharmed. If the regulation is a simple series resistor, parallel zener
then if the zener shorted, the series resistor would be directly across
the 14 odd volts of the car system and would indeed get very hot
dissipating the best part of 20 watts. if however it did unsolder, that
would remove all power from the circuit, no spark - dead stop.

Rather fanciful, if the MOSFET failed, the worst that the capacitor
would be subject to would be a normal back emf, or a constant 14 volts
and neither of those is going to cause it to explode.

Far more likely:

The resistor in the bottom of the distributor is most likely R23 which
can be seen to be missing in
https://www.imagebam.com/view/ME4MPQ9?full=1, and that seems to be in
parallel to R22 and connected between pin 3 of the MOSFET and ground.
They are low value reasonably high wattage resistors presumably as
current limiters or ballast. A long way from the power input.

So what happened, the capacitor was either underspecc'd or faulty, it
couldn't handle the pressure of absorbing the back emf and eventually
blew its brains out. The capacitor has 2 jobs, firstly to absorb the
back emf of the coil when the MOSFET switches off, and also to return
that energy to the coil. Without that energy being returned, the spark
would be weaker thus the ignition "Stumble" Eventually the MOSFET gives
up the unequal struggle and goes short, no more spark and now R22 and
R23 are just in series with the coil across the 14 volt power. R23 gets
hot enough to unsolder itself and there we are.

Alternative cause, the term ignition coil is a misnomer, in electronics
a coil is just one wire coiled up, its purpose simply to provide
inductance to a circuit. An ignition "Coil" has two windings making it a
transformer. The primary attached to the ignition circuit has relatively
few turns of reasonably thick wire, the secondary lots of turns of thin
wire. The energy in both is the same(less losses), the energy in the
primary is low voltage high current, in the secondary high voltage low
current, the ratio of the number of turns in each determines the volts
out vs the volts in (electronics 101). It is in fact a pulse transformer
since it doesn't woke on constant AC voltages, but just give high
voltage DC pulses on the output. Now, the insulation between the
windings has to be excellent otherwise some of that high voltage can
leak back from the secondary into the primary and back into this circuit
with a somewhat detrimental effect. I have seen posts on the web
indicating that this is not a completely unknown situation which is why
I suggested that the coil should be suspected.

That's hardly surprising. Jerky's real world hands on experience with
MSD distributors is nil, and all he's been doing is screaming about shit
he's found on Google and tried to pass off as his own personal knowledge.

For what it's worth, your synopsis ties in with exactly what happened.
Dead ignition stop and zero restart. Bearing in mind that this thing had
a random intermittent miss since the day I bought it, and on the one
previous occasion when the distributor was taken out of the engine &
dismantled to change the timing advance limiting stop everything on the
inside looked fine. Nothing changed, everything was working as it always
had, and the crappy distributor components just decided they'd had enough.

Which is *very* typical of anything made by MSD in the last 5 years, and
which is why the only reason I have this distributor is because it came
with the vehicle when I bought it.

Their stuff is unreliable cheap shit junk.

off your head. You do tend to have a superiority complex, in matters
automotive, you're superior to noddy and Daryl because you did an
apprenticeship and don't believe that they did, in matters electronic,
you're superior to some-one who did a full 5 year apprenticeship in the

research organisation, then 50 odd years working *professionally* in the

It's ridiculously ironic that he bags anyone *else* for "bignoting"
themselves when that seems to be *his* favourite hobby, but more
importantly it's interesting to observe how *nasty* he gets when he
comes across someone who challenges his "expertise" and it becomes
obvious to him that he's out of his depth.

The wiring layout is red to coil+/Ign, black to ground, and orange
(which looks brown in these pics and is the single burnt wire off on
it's own) to coil neg. The grey wire at the "RPM" point is the tach
signal. The "P" and "R" markings in pink are the locations where the
original magnetic pickup wires were connected, which are now running off
out of the distributor to the HEI ignition module I'm using to handle
the ignition firing.

Rather than just use the Coil neg to drive the tacho, these units have a
specific tach signal wire on these boards as they have a built in rev
limiter and the tach signal wire is used to program it. Programming is
achieved by holding the engine at half the desired rpm where you wish
the limiter to cut in, and then ground the tach signal wire for one
second. From that point on if you were successful when the ignition is
turned on the tach needle would do a pre start sweep up to the desired
rpm limit.

I never used the rev limiter so I couldn't tell you how well (if at all)
it worked, and now that I'm using a separate stand-alone ignition module
my tacho is driven by the coil neg.
