(An acquaintance disappeared at sea a couple of years ago. An excellent
waterman, his sailboat was found a few miles offshore. Many assumed he

I can remember the reg. number of the Triumph 2000 my dad had in the mid
seventies (according to DVLA it was on the road until 1982). However, I
can't quite remember the number of my current most-used bike, so I'm not
sure I qualify for membership.

I can remember the numbers of my mum's three Minis (serially owned) and
dad's rotbox Victor 101 estate, my first two cars, some other cars, both
my Meriden Bonnies, and several of my Hinckley Triumphs (notably the
Daytona 900 and Tiger 900, both of which are long gone), my current
Tiger 800, my current car and wife's current car, but I'm failing to
remember the T120's number.

Funnily enough, I don't know the number of my little Fiat 500, which might be because it has an Italian plate on it, and a New York plate on the backseat. I'll probably memorize the Italian one this spring. I also don't know the number of my airport car, but I don't care so much about that.

I have a piece of paper in my wallet with a bunch of phone numbers on
it. It's roughly 30 years old. Most of the numbers don't include the
area code... and I'd guess only about 20 percent are still assigned
to the same people (if they're still alive)..

I'd have a hard time remembering _anyone's_ phone number at this
point. Didn't used to be the case, I could rattle off all of my
friends' numbers. Now, Landru remembers...

When I was about 15, a bloke came to the door to see my Dad, but Dad was out. The bloke asked me to ask Dad to give him a call at work. He gave me a London phone number (which at the time was 11 digits) and a four digit extension number. I didn't write it down.

About three years later, the bloke's name came up. "Oh, yeah" I said, "he came to the door a while ago and asked you to call him and his number is xxxx-xxx-xxxx extension xxxx but I think I forgot to give you the message". Oops.
