Population density has a hell of a lot to do with that.

Look at Western Australia for example. They have a population density of
less than one person per square kilometer. At that rate they should be
able to *comfortably* deal with a contagious virus. Queensland is in a
similar situation with it's population density of 3 persons per square km.

By comparison, Victoria has a population density 25 times greater than
that of Western Australia, making it far more difficult to contain the
spread than it would be in states like WA an QLD where the population is
spread over a far greater area.

I suspect the situation will be very similar in other states that have
so far avoided a major outbreak.

Happened to be discussing it with the local pharmacist only
yesterday.... Partly down to complacency (it's never been a problem
here so why bother) along with lack of access (the only vaccine
currently available to him is AZ).

FWIW it took wife and I three months after the beginning of the
rollout to get our first shots in spite of numerous phone calls to QH
backed up by complete misinformation on their website... which clearly
indicated vaccine was available in locations where it definitely
wasn't.

It just so happens that Queensland Health is about as competent as the
feds. Consequently there are also many who don't trust either or
believe anything they say.

The offshoot being that when the state is due to open up (Dec 17 IIRC)
Pchook will have no other option than to lock down those LGA's that
haven't reached their 80%. Mentioned it to a local publican whose
response was... "bullshit, where did you hear that". He might wake up
when his customers start to die!

It's fucked all over the country, which is what I was referring to the
other day when I said that Palaszczuk would be doing her best to prevent
the media from finding out how inadequate the QLD health system is.

It's not a QLD specific thing. It's an Australia wide thing and we've
faced the same problem down here in VIC.
