The cynic in me wonders if he'd had an eye to re-using some of the tales
in some future publication.

But he wasn't the only one to x-noarchive in those days, none of my
previous personas exist, well hardly exist.

Looking at what Cambridge Analytica etc. did with facebook I think his
paranoia was justified. The sheer amount of personal data many of us
just shed across social media is staggering; more than enough for
identity theft and possibly worse.

I have boxes and boxes of tapes - still.

I'd fitted a late 70s tape machine to the Jag, coupled to a tape thing
and 3.5 jack I could connect my phone but that was a bit of a faff.

It is also now redundant...

I have an old Radiomobile I'm going to gut (although on first
examination that is easier said than done) and fit a 12v bluetooth
amp/board I picked up from ebay. I've got some reasonable(ish) quality
speakers in place of the originals, but in the original housings.

Whether I'll be able to hear anything over the wind noise [1] is
anyone's guess.

[1] Old cars are very noisy [2] - even if they have grace, space and
pace - it will surprise you if you've got used to anything made in the
last two decades.

[2] New door seals will probably make a huge difference.

I'm not sure if this is an age thing, or just me [1]...

However, I don't think I can name a new band/artist [2] - or at least
anyone that's come about in the last ten years.

I don't listen to radio 1 or six music (I may do if JCC is hosting, but
not regularly) and just don't pick up on anything anymore.

I do have a full Spotify account but that's, mostly, just for listening
to stuff I already own on CD.

Maybe, it's me that's killed new music. I just don't like it anymore.

[1] I suspect I'm going to know the answer.
[2] Molchat Doma - and that's only because I liked the music to the
goth bats and looked it up (it's not really that new sounding). It
seems that track is everywhere on Instagram.

I've heard of a few, usually via quiz and panel shows on TV. But even
those who I'm predisposed to like, e.g. a solo guitar and voice
singer-songwriter like Ed Sheeran, I find hard to enjoy.

Yes, It's always been thus, and I've never been one to keep up with,
or to like, most of the 'current' trends over the last thirty years or
so, but I do thinkl something's hapenned to music in recent years that
marks it out as a more major change.

I don't think it's in any way connected with the means of delivery
though. More, I put it down to Disney and the like bombarding kids
with warbly stuff like "let it go" from a very young age. The voice
style that seems to have become the norm in recent years just grates
on me something awful.

perhaps.

Ah yes, well I certainly relate to that.

TBF my Defender is actually younger than that, but I'd bet that it's
probably an order of magnititude louder than any Shite Old Jag.

>[2] New door seals will probably make a huge difference.

Been there, done that, but in fact wind noise is much less of an issue
than mechanical. I fitted soundproofing to the bonnet which made a
huge difference, and apparently doing the same to the engine/cab
bulkhead is even more effective, but that needs most of the engine bay
to be stripped in order to fit, and that's waaay beyond my
effort/reward threshold.

New speakers will be fitted in the not too distant future - the amp in
the Android head unit can now easily overwhelm them. Although TBF if
you were to turn the sound up enough to listen properly to music at
motorway speeds you're probably in danger of going deaf(er) anyway.

I can name one or two 'folkie' artists from the last (checks) ah they go
back further than I thought from 2008 though not aware of them (via
SWMBO) until 2015.

I was going to suggest The Sleaford Mods but they're closer to 15 years
than 10.

Almost all of what I considered to be 'new' music is close to 20 years old.

So I *suspect* it's mostly an age thing. Someone I used to work with managed
to keep up with new music releases with genuine interest and enthusiasm,
not some sort of sad 'I'm not old' thing; but he was certainly the exception.

There are two options. One, is search for posts by YTC#1, who famously does not snip (sorry Bruce, but old memes die hard). And the second is to see if he repeated any stories on reddit, where he was quite prolific. This is his stuff, sorted by upvotes: https://old.reddit.com/user/MisterShine/?sort=top

I listen to Planet Rock, and yes I know it is a lot of old shite.
But they do play new(ish) stuff, and that usually makes me go and nuy a
CD (or 2).

That never occurred to me, but he did have quite a leaning towards monetization didn't he. I assumed it was about privacy - I remember him tearing into some poster for calling him "Murray", and it was pointed out that his posting email address was chateau.murray@whatever.

In your case, balancing a successful career and creating some separation with an online persona seemed very wise. I did the same for a while. But you're right, in the last few years (a) I probably post fewer controversial or potentially career-limiting things, and (b) I realize that there's "a lot" out there in my name, and I've landed on the best policy being a single authentic self. I'm comfortable with that at this point.

Anyone who wants to be me is more than welcome to it, tbh.

I was the same until relatively recently. I had ripped every CD I owned and had them all in iTunes. I had four recordings of Beethoven's 3rd Symphony, ten or eleven renditions of Autumn Leaves...what else did I need? I didn't have time to listen to the music I already had.

But then a year ago I subscribed to Apple Music. And now I effectively have all music in the world. But what's great is the AI-generated playlists. Because I like certain things, it will suggest other things, and I give them a go. It's been really pleasurable, and has returned music to a more central place in my life, compared to the last decade. Now I'm just sorry I don't have more time for music.
