2 years ago (just pre- new times) we went to a Rock and Blues weekend at
Skegness.

There was a surprising number of decent (non covers & non aging famous
rockers).

I get what you mean, but there is only so far many chords and so many
ways they can be played, surely?

Then there are the bands that you missed the 1st time around. Recently I
got into Withn Temptation and Halestorm.

Before autotune, every studio in the world had a simple piece of
equipment that was used whenever a singer couldn't sing. It was called
the door and they would be shown it.

If when I turn on the ignition the radio comes on because L may have been the
last one in there's almost a sonic boom as I reach for the off button.

Gawd yes, one of my contract jobs SW testing various rap was played constantly

Annoying as that is, I think it's used less now than it was ten years
ago.

It's the pseudo-gospel and R&B[1] influenses that have been more
popularised and develped into a vocal style that really grates on me.

[1] Modern R&B, not the real thing that was at the heart of early Rock

Love the Sleaford Mods, we have Radio 6 Music on in the workshop all days which gives a great mix of new stuff and non-mainstream stuff.

I like it as it avoids cheesy old grandad rock which seems to flavour de jour around these parts.

There's some fucking great music out there at the moment, I guess at the end of day it's what people feel comfortable with.
I keep an open mind and will pretty much listen to anything, nothing scares me music wise, but I won't listen most classical, that is not to say I won't enjoy it when I hear it. I appreciate it, but it won't be dropping into my Qobuz/Tidal stream anytime soon.
Charty new RnB/HipHop/Mainstream pop, I'll avoid, but I don't go out of my way to isolate myself and say I'm only going to listen to X because everything else is shit.
I think I just enjoy discovering new music. I'm that type, enjoy trying new foods, films, exploring, reading new books etc, rather than pigeonholing myself and falling under a safe label.

HFM!

I had seen them before and that's what prompted me to get a bluetooth
amp to put in the body of an old Radiomobile.
Something like this (but it's not quite the same):
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/294119322461

Unfortunately I have to remove the mechanical linkage on the preselect
buttons - they're quite heavy duty - to make room to fit the card which
will be a pity as the clunking is quite enjoyable.

I was going to use the volume on/off potentiometer (?)(or another with
the orignal knob refitted) to turn the card on and off and maybe act as
a hard volume - with an LED to light up the old radio tuning scale.

Like the songs in Snow White sounded like Throbbing Gristle?

Autotune is still widely used. The trick of using it without smoothing, that's probably less common than it used to be, but I still hear it a lot. Just not as extreme as it was in Believe.

R&B is, and has always been, nothing more than a euphemism for whatever "black" music was at the time.

Let's face it. You got old and culture moved on without you. Not exactly a fresh story.

More recently, "Doesn't Matter (Voleur de Soleil)" was pretty good.

Same here. I've still got all my old CDs as MP3s on a file share, and they rarely get played. There's a fair bit of overlap with stuff I've got in Spotify playlists, but for the most part when I scroll through the folders it's all just a bit meh.

Though I did queue a few up over Christmas, and while most were firmly in the "might as well delete it" bucket, a few stood out. Placebo's first album being one of them, much (much!) to my surprise.

Interesting, ta. It certainly worked.

I'm trying to recall the interview I heard recently (maybe on Graham
Norton) where a film used Queen's Stone Cold Crazy because the Led
Zeppelin track they wanted was just far too expensive.

Good point - but I'll see if I can cobble something up myself.

I've got an acquaintance who fits them to old radio sets - I'm rather
regretting throwing out the four or five MW/LW sets I'd accumulated at
the lockup when I moved out.

I started to watch "Beauty and the Beast" a few weeks ago (in my
defence, SWMBO wanted to watch it and I was a passive victim), and gave
up halfway through the first song. Emma Watson autotuned to within an
inch of her life. Either give her some vocal training or get her to mime
to someone who can sing. Or maybe train the sound tech to use autotune
more smoothly.

There's a very neat bit in there where some hip-hop (I think, all these
genres seem the same to me) gets merged in at the exact tempo.

In my school days, I liked Focus and Yes, not Genesis (although in later
years I got to like those albums more, from Lamb Lies Down backwards).
Also liked Pink Floyd and Tyrannosaurus Rex, and T. Rex.
