We've got a couple of dozen LFT self-test kits here (results in 15
mins), and I was going to bring a handful. But you sounds like it has
to be an 'official test', administered by a medic?

Cycling 80 miles a day out in the wind by yourself is a *completely*
different challenge from cycling in a group where you take it in turns
to lead. The former would be genuinely hard (imo), and the latter
relatively easy. Is he planning to ride with others on the trip? If
not, ask him to reconsider

Of course he will

As I say, you should check what the requirements are for you if you're
just transiting, but the UK in general needs a proper certified test,
yes. Up to a few weeks ago it had to be the PCR, which is why I
mentioned the LFT.

On further investigation, it looks like we got it wrong, no test
required if you are fully vaccinated. Not sure when that change came
in.

On his tod and with panniers on his cycle. Windy on Sunday apparently
(though a calm crossing Newhaven - Dieppe overnight tomorrow for a very
early strat) by the look of it.

He already has reconsidered, but he hasn't let us in on his entire
modified itinerary yet. May just go as far as Beauvais.

Fairly resilient usually. Physically, I expect he will be OK. Despite
having spent the equivalent of 3 months of the years in France between
2003 and 2011, however, his command of French is hardly extensive. Also
a poor sense of geography and topography. He relies totally on Google
maps on his phone. Trying to get him to load a navigational app with a
map of France actually on his device. Then he has to keep it charged so
hoping he will take the advice to get a paper map.

<Checks forecast>

Ah, he will now get the wind on Monday it seems and a rough last couple
of hours on the ferry. Following wind though so his panniers will act as
sail without too much crosswind hopefully. Might advise him to hunker
down in Dieppe for the day though.

To be fair, I don't think they're that difficult, it's just that
there's been lots of changes, which reflects the changing situation

So, to recap

It's pretty much a description of what I did when driving a Morris

And there had been the journey (at night, including losing a chain...) from
Oslo to Hamar without studs fitted.

Almost ashamed to admit I hadn't realised we were riding on hard packed ice
at that time. Too traumatised from 'the chain' and lying in the road trying to
avoid being hit by a lorry as I untangled/re-adjusted/bodged it.

The actual post I replied to, word-for-word, was this:

"It's where hordes of babes have to wait before crossing from their
neighborhoods to the beach where they hang out for the day.
For the best view, book your flight in August or early September."

I know it was a quip, but trust me, the thought of middle-aged to geriatric men going somewhere just to look at women and girls maybe a quarter of their age in swimwear, while simply waiting to cross the road, is pretty much the dictionary definition of creepy. And that's coming from a middle-aged man. It's not an edifying look.

I was born here. I didn't come here. If you live here, you can't avoid
seeing it. I spent much of my life in the ocean, but my surf break is on
rocks most of the year, so it's not a mecca for beach goers. Even so,
they're only 150 metres away. And in the markets, and the cafes. I
thought it was normal until I went to the midwest and was struck by how
obese everyone is.
BTW, that quip was pried out of me by a UKRMer, for UKRMers. It worked,
obviously.

Indeed so. In retrospect quipping back was 'so 1970s'.

Perceptive.

Phone call yesterday morning. Knee 'blown up' about 20Kms out from
Dieppe. I suspect the London to Newhaven leg was tackled with too much
gusto, and by the sound of it, rather overloaded and unbalanced panniers.

Made it back to Dieppe riding very gently OK to a hotel and a decent
dinner (though sadly the Hotel Windsor of French Run fame restaurant was
not open).

Decided after consulting with other cycling and sport science mates that
he has a 'slightly torn MCL'. Leaving his bike at the Dieppe hotel today
(agreed by them) and going by train to Paris for his two nights there.

Not sure how he is getting back from Newhaven to London, but if no room
on a train and a mate can't pick him up we will go and collect him with
cycle carrier on a car or in the 'MH'. Or a one way car hire by him.

A life lesson learned - including the French for "my knee is fucked -
can I leave my bike with you".

That's a shame.

For future ref - cycling should really put minimal stress on the
knees. If it is, you're turning to big a gear - change down, and spin
faster. The ideal cadence (revs) for cycling is 85~90. Most people
spin slower, and "grunt" their way along - especially young fit men
with strong legs. This is when knees can suffer

There are two kinds of people in this world: grinders and spinners.

Ooh, dodgy knee. Welcome to my world.

(Pervesly riding helps my knee.... unless I do 40-50 miles)

I think the days of packed trains again are a long way off.
More likely no train available :-)

Good point, I only know how to say stuff like that about the motorbike.
