What did I get wrong? The Royal Navy isn't your run of the mill employer
where its "employees" can decide to quit whenever they'd like.

No one leaves military service without permission from that military
service. To do otherwise makes a person an instant fugitive (AWOL), so
if you're no longer on active duty, you've been dismissed.

work, it would make the filevault encryption worthless.

encryption keys needed to decrypt the SSD. A different T2 will have
different encryption keys.

If you get the SSD out it'll be encrypted. Without the key, you don't
get to see the filesystems on *any* kind of machine.

I never stated that File Vault was used to encrypt the drive...File
Vault and firmware password are two separate procedures.

I have cut and pasted this directly from the Apple help page:

Your Mac asks for the firmware password only when attempting to start up
from a storage device other than the one selected in Startup Disk
preferences, or when starting up from macOS Recovery. Enter the firmware
password when you see the lock and password field:

That said, the owner informed me that all her data are backed up and I
am free to experiment at will.
She does not want to spend money on a ten year old computer that she got
free to take it to the Apple store.

Even if I do reset her operating system password, she is intent on
getting a new computer anyway.
If I succeed, all I will have done is buy her a little time.

If I don't succeed, the couple bucks I spent on the adapter will allow
me to at least format the drive and use it elsewhere.

you mentioned the t2 chip, which guarantees that the ssd is encrypted.

you clearly don't know what a t2 chip is or what it's used for, and
have the ridiculous idea that swapping a t2 chip is even a realistic
option. it's not.

you also don't know that there is no t2 chip in the mac you claim to
have.

there's no way to determine if filevault is used without the firmware
password you claim is required.

in other words, you *can't* know if filevault is being used at this

both increase security, so if a firmware password is set, there is a
very high likelihood of filevault also being used. not guaranteed, but

apple will reset the firmware password for *free*, assuming she has
proper documentation of ownership, which is required so that randos
can't reset it on a mac that is not legitimately theirs.

as previously mentioned, a better solution is find someone who worked
at the company and who would know what the password is. also free.

the mac is too old for apple to repair it, so it's actually not
possible to spend money for any repair service.

Filevault encryption is the default on Macs with T2 chips and is an
obvious thing for a company's security policy to have set up anyway. So
I think you can reasonably safely assume it is encrypted.

t2 means the ssd is encrypted with a device-specific key. filevault is
an optional additional choice, with a user-supplied passphrase.

it also doesn't matter since the mac he claims to have does not have a
t2 chip.

File Vault is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY turned ***off***

Good news. A few here ...without even seeing the machine...made the
*assumption* that the drive is encrypted. The first thing I did was
check that but what the heck... I double checked just now and File Vault
is set to NOT encrypted.

It will be a few more days before the adapter gets here at which point I
should be able to reset the operating system password from Linux.

A few here also made the assumption that I am trying to reset the
firmware password. NO, I am not.

I am trying to reset the operating system password or simply setup a new
administrative account.

The No-SPAM moron is in my killfile so I will not see any of his idiot
posts. I see a few here trying to argue with him. No use in trying to
reason with someone that far mentally ill.

For the last time.
The drive is NOT encrypted nor am I trying to reset the firmware password.

I find it foolish for all here who have not even seen the machine to automatically assume things.

I'm sure all here know the saying.

nope. what they said was that if there's a firmware password, as you
claimed, there is a very good chance that the ssd is also encrypted.

enabling a firmware password without encrypting the ssd is a security
hole since the ssd could be removed, giving access to its contents.

how did you check for that, given that you don't have a password for
the computer?
