>I've never noticed canned mackerel in stores before. Mackerel patties are probably okay but I've never heard of such a dish. In the US, most people buy canned tuna or salmon. I'll look to see if there's any canned mackerel in the store. I won't buy any but knowing that it exists is the first step.

There's the nice John West or similar brand and there are cheaper,
rougher, taller cans, with bones still in.

I'd use bread crumbs, but yeah why not.

That's what I like about them. Canned tuna's boring. Canned salmon's
ok, canned mackerel's nice, IMO. As far as canned goes, of course.

Since we're talking about canned fish, I had a can of King Oscar sardines
and crackers late last night. Mmmmm, mmmmm. I made the mistake
many weeks ago of buying a can of them in the 'Mediterranean' style.
That turned out to be a bit of tomato and some green olives. Definitely
won't be buying those again.

Yes, I think au naturel is better. You can always fluff them up
yourself.

What are you implying Jill does with corn?

jack is another name for it and it is edible but i
do prefer sardines or salmon instead. no need to go
for the sockeye red either as i think pink is just
fine. i'm not too picky there compared to some other
things when it comes down to fish. :)

turn them after they get brown on top i can't
give a certain time because it depends upon
ingredients, how big you make them, how moist,
and how hot your oven is. i couldn't even tell
you what Mom put them in at but probably 350F
so is that a medium oven? i'm sure they'd be
good fried in a little butter on a cast iron
pan if you only had a few.

normally we make enough for two days.

no spices for Mom. i like them plain myself
too because i love onions and salmon together
and that is how i eat them without lemon or
anything else.

cornmeal and some egg would work for me i've
had them all sorts of ways by now as when i
made them for myself i would use whatever i
had on hand.

it's a Mom thing, i don't have a preference as long

bland as you can ask for.

GMOs, distortion of the food supply. In 2004 (the date turned up
by a quick google), the U.S. consumed 707,000 metric tons of corn.
Canada was about 347,000. Most other countries don't even rate.

Of course, about 45% of U.S. consumption is used for animal feed,
44% for ethanol, and only 10% is used for human consumption. Of
that last 10%, about 1/3 of it is used for high-fructose corn syrup.

Not every American eats those things. I certainly don't. I keep
meaning to try polenta, but when bread and pasta are available I
just don't see the point of eating cornmeal mush.

You should give polenta a try. It can be pretty good. That being said, I
have not had it in years. I don't eat much born. We go through about a
back of frozen corn a year and over the course of corn on the cob season
I eat only about a half dozen cobs.

I don't dislike corn, but I got tired of it years ago. My mother always
served two or three vegetables with dinner, and one of them was usually
corn.

blueberry muffins (we mix the corn muffin mix
with flour to cut it some as Mom doesn't like full
on corn meal), pop corn, fresh corn, frozen corn,
corn dogs are about our most frequent uses of corn
(in order of what is used most). not a huge
amount. corn syrup Mom uses for making caramel
corn, i don't normally touch it.

grits or polenta are very very rare things for
me to eat and i doubt Mom has eaten those in
this century let alone a good chunk of the last.

succotash was a thing many years ago as also
were things like corn relish and grilled corn
roasts with the extended family at the farm.

Polenta is Italian. You'd find it in my house often.

Polenta comes from flint corn, which is courser and holds a firmer
texture, while dent corn (or hominy) used for grits produces a finer
consistency. And while it isn't the case across the board, the corn used
to create polenta is generally yellow, while grits are white.

Agreed, Joan. I tried using canned mackerel once; that "more flavour"
Bruce mentioned was more like almost spoiled fish. I'll pay the extra
pennies for the salmon. :)

It was back in the early 70s when I worked with sea mammals and had to
cut up so much mackerel and developed an aversion to it. I was a little
upset when my wife came home with mackerel steaks for supper. I ended
up grilling them and making a lemon butter and caper sauce and they
turned out okay, but not so good that we did them again.

I seem to recall someone asking recently if they still sell canned
mackerel. I do remember seeing in a store here not all that long ago. At
the time I wondered who in their right mind would buy it.

IMO, mackerel is simply not a good tasting fish. Canning it doesn't
make it any better.

Even I have heard of polenta. I don't know if I've ever had it. Maybe
in a restaurant.

Salmon is a safer bet for most people. It's got a more mainstream
flavour. Mackerel's very fishy, like sardines are too. I like that.

I like salmon and tuna. Both are better fresh than canned. The canned
versions are still pretty good and quite edible, but I am not prepared
to try canned mackerel. I suppose there is the chance of dealing with
some sort of apocalyptic event with such a severe shortage of food that
I might be desperate enough to try it but I hope not.

There's a big difference between this type:

and

this type:

A Japanese breakfast with a little bit of mackerel would be great. Waking up and having the house smell like fish that was fried the night before is not fine. Having a house that smells like fish is not fine.
