10kw is roughly what a car needs to maintain a constant ~80k/h on a flat road

No, 2 to 3 kw battery inverter would do. Just enough to bring it up to shift gear (15% SOC).

They (dispatcher and tow-er) were ill prepared for EV, especially totally dead battery (10% SOC). Jack-up tow truck would be better than flat bed, for locked wheels. With flat bed, he should at least have wheel dollies. Also, he was pulling left or right wheels alternatively, because he did not have cross-strap connecting both wheels. Perhaps it's the owner's (me) responsibility to carry towing cross strap. A flat-bed need to wait for me to charge 5% to unlock drive chain, whereas jack-up can just drop me off there.. Anyway, good learning experience for both of us. But how many other tow-er and driver need to learn this way?

I was 12 miles from charging station. Around 4 kwhr would do. My empty battery can charge at 40kw DCFC. 10 to 15 min would be enough.

LOL! Yes, the public is ready for BEVs. It's the Ed factor that we aren't ready for. Maybe I shouldn't judge so harshly, but you create these problems by driving a very unrealistic vehicle. What is your range in this contraption? I think you said about 40-50 miles? That's hybrid territory, not BEV.

I just learned the other day that the Leaf is not rated to be charged at DC fast chargers without significant wear to the battery. Even then, it is limited to some low number, like 70 kW? Maybe that's not unrealistic since the batteries in them are not so large. The limitation to charging time is actually the C rating, meaning they all achieve around 1 hour, give or take, for a total charge.

With flat bed, he should at least have wheel dollies. Also, he was pulling left or right wheels alternatively, because he did not have cross-strap connecting both wheels. Perhaps it's the owner's (me) responsibility to carry towing cross strap. A flat-bed need to wait for me to charge 5% to unlock drive chain, whereas jack-up can just drop me off there. Anyway, good learning experience for both of us. But how many other tow-er and driver need to learn this way?

If you continue to drive in a manner that any hiccup will sideline you, you will find very few towing companies know how to tow an EV. Why? Because they've never had to tow one.

So from this I get that if a tow truck had a 10 kw generator on it you
could take about half an hour charge and go about 10 to 15 miles. That
shoud be enough to get you to a charging station in many cases. You
could even have a friend to put a home type portable generator in the
back of a pickup truck and bring it to you for charging if you ran out
out battery power not too far from home.

Guess that you could have small trailer behind the car with a genertor
on it to get you home. Sort of like a picture I saw of a 'red neck air
conditioner' on a car. Home window unit in the car window and generator
powering it.

Each Tesla should come standard with a Honda generator in the trunk.

10kwhr battery should weight about 150 pounds in 3 to 4 cu. ft. Can fit inside the frame of a flat bed.

Laugh what you want. There are still hundred thousand of us around.

> If you continue to drive in a manner that any hiccup will sideline you, you will find very few towing companies know how to tow an EV. Why? Because they've never had to tow one.

Yes, we only need a self driving mobile charger, no towing necessary.

I have a portable 12V 250 Ah lifepo4 battery, makes 3000 Wh or 3 kWh
http://panteltje.com/pub/250_Ah_12V_to_230V_sinewave_IXXIMG_0796.JPG
Bit like having a Jerrycan
3 in the back should be no problem.

Can't the tow truck tow you and your batteries charge regeneratively?

That would not help Ed one bit. Is he really that stupid or is it just that he is so envious that he hates Musk, Tesla and everything remotely attached to it.

By 2025 the sales of BEVs in the US will be over 10% of the total and growing at leaps and bounds. Larkin's life is going to get very, very miserable as we progress to 80% of cars on the roads being BEVs in ten years or so.

It can also easily fit in passenger car. Most BEVs have enough range to go more than 50 miles.

Why don't you start that business?

No override? Sounds like a design flaw, but there are probably reasons.

What's so "freedom" is that people are free to choose driving and they
do. The reasons are different in different areas but it's just practical
to have the flexibility.

Japan would fit easily between you and Chicago. For those distances
planes are more practical. Japan even had a custom "commuter" version of
the 747 made only for them, with smaller tanks and modifications to last
for many short trips.

You only need to charge electrically enough to unlock the transmission
after that you can be towed and charge by using the cars much more
powerful in-built generator. A steel cable can transfer more kilowatts
than a copper cable of the same size.

You don't know what the car can handle. Towing a car is not a simple matter. They normally lift the driven wheels. If that would be the front wheels, I think leaving them on the roadway makes for an interesting tow.

In due course. First, they (google or cruise) need to be approved for FSD. Then we can order a custom version with battery and charger inside. It's going to be a Leaf club, just for older EV and Tesla charging at Nissan dealers. I have seen a few, don't know why they need to do that.

release motor parking lock, since there is no transmission. need to charge from 10% SOC (complete failure) to 15% SOC (can shift into neutral). 20% SOC is drivable.

and not sure if it will regenerate properly if towing backward by jacking up the back wheels.

Running out for another six-pack after you get there.

It's funny to see rich greenies fly to climate conferences in their
private jets, where their gigabuck yachts are waiting. They tend to
build multiple mansions in the mountains and right on the beach in
Malibu and Martha's Vineyard and Hawaii.

And tell us to walk and wait for busses and eat lentils. And to grow
natural non-GMO food without fertilizer.

I am going to call this self driving flat bed (not truck or trailer) the "Leaf Rack".

Describes a tiny fraction of "greenies." Like 1% of them, perhaps...

Man when was the last time you ever waited for a bus or had to eat
lentils cuz you didn't have a choice in the matter, 1972? No one's ever
going to force you to do any of that, you're fine.
