Indeed. It's all very well making a new format which has much better compression, but not if it only improves it by 2%.

I bet it's more to do with people not being able to use other formats due to pathetic childish copyright laws.

On that note, I'm surprised VLC can be free when all those codecs are supposed to be paid for.

No doubt things have been handled poorly -- and in any large system there will
always be issues. There is no utopia. But we are much better off with safety
standards than without.

And also led to some improvements... but, yes, some IP laws can be absurd
(Disney has far too much power in IP laws!)

The standards are set and cannot be changed on a per-person situation. You go
to the store to buy an apple... they are not going to have the apples which
have had protections from regulations and the ones that have not. Or if they
do they cannot for every product.
