Somewhat indirectly. British Columbia takes its name from the Columbia
River (to distinguish it from Oregon to the south, the American portion
of the Columbia river basin). The river takes its name from the ship
Columbia Rediviva (Columbus revived), an American ship involved in the
fur trade, the first to record the existence of the river.

You wouldn't be able to fit a skeleton in a cupboard.

Somewhere between the two?

I'm not sure what you're trying to cover with Durex=Sellotape in
Aussie? Sellotape is the major brand of adhesive tape Down Under (as
in the Ewe Kay too I think). 3M's Scotch Tape in North America
ditto... and both brands' names have entered local lexicon as the
generic label for the item.

Aussies giggle at clothing from a True North company whose products
are emblazoned with "Roots Canada".

Yeah, and the area to the north (i.e. a large portion of present day
Washington state) was stolen from "us".

Queen Vicky somehow got involved in the 49th eventually becoming the
mainland border to tidewater, resulting in us holding a tiny finger of
WA state hostage south of Vancouver!

The 49th extending so far was something of an accident. When that border
was agreed, it was to extend from Lake of the Woods (the NW corner,
leading to the other oddity in the border) to where it met the
Mississippi river, on the belief that it extended that far north. The
agreement, once the fact that it didn't cross the Mississippi led to
another awkward incident. It was agreed that Vancouver Island would be
British, so the border was to extend to the tidewaters of the Pacific
and then follow the middle of the "main channel" between there and the
ocean around the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

Unfortunately there is no "main channel", there are islands that fill
the channel with no clear main channel. The islands were slowly
populated by both Americans and British (Canada wasn't involved in the
west yet), and nobody really was much concerned, until a pig belonging
to a British settler was shot for digging up the garden of an American
settler on one of the islands in between Vancouver Island and the
mainland. There resulted a jurisdictional disagreement that resulted in
500 US soldiers and 5 RN warships with over 2000 men threatening war.
Cool heads on the ground prevailed, and initially everyone agreed to
disagree peacefully, until the Kaiser was brought in as an independent
arbitrator to resolve where the border should be (he made the wrong choice).

Apparently the naming is not directly connected to the Genoese chap
rather than an 18th century ship the "Columbia Rediviva" via the name
of a river -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Rediviva
Ultimately the name derives from the Latin for a cock-pigeon but that
probably wouldn't sound so good.

An initial Brit-US agreement in 1818 was for the 49th from Lake of the
Woods to the peak of the Rockies, based on watersheds.

The Hudson's Bay Company had established their trading post at Fort
Vancouver (now Vancouver, WA opposite Portland, OR), on the north bank
of the Columbia in the mid-1800's.

The two governments squabbled over the Oregon Territory as increasing
numbers of settlers trundled in the wake of Lewis and Clark, until the
tidewater treaty in 1846.

Wonkpedia mentions the early Brit wish to cut the 49th extension where
it hits the Columbia, and for the river to be the border to the
Pacific.

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_boundary_dispute>

The river hits the paralleI within easy walking distance from
present-day Trail, BC where I once lived. That's ~800km (40% of its
total length) from source in BC's Rocky Mountain trench.

The distinction is probably only temporary.
