I gave my missus the ol' didgeridoo as well.

Sky Arts showed a documentary about Jethro Tull early this morning. I
watched part of it and have the last 75 minutes recorded as it is very
long, but quite interesting.

The bit about drifting towards folk/jazz and away from blues was given as
the root cause of the ejection of Mick Abrahams

Prior to Tull programme was a documentary about rock drumming, with its
roots in military beats and jazz patterns. It was interesting to hear from
the drummers in Deep Purple and Black Sabbath how they took bits from these
traditions to create their unique styles. Both documentaries go to show how
new music genres are fusions of what has gone before and a little
originality. Bands have to be considered in Venn diagrams not single
categories.

Not really. Maybe as many as 30 times over 5 or 6 years. The first time
was life changing, in a positive way. The last few were meh, so-so.

Any definition that includes the Beatles, the Beach Boys and the
Grateful Dead is a waste of time. It's akin to saying a sourdough loaf,
pita and tortillas are all bread.

Point of order.

Bands evolve.

Personally, I really like Jethro Tull, even some of the comparatively
recent stuff like jtull.com. They certainly progressed through 'prog' to
folk rock and beyond?

She's seven years older than me. How long have you fancied her for, for

There are some indicators, which are neither exclusive to prog nor
necessary for prog. Odd time signatures (as you'll also find in Foo
Fighters' "Times like these" and John Miles' "Music", not to mention
"Golden Brown" by the Stranglers - I'd mention "Tubular Bells" but I'm
not sure which side of the divide you want to place that) and operatta
form (also found in "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Music" (again), not to
mention "Bat out of Hell" and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meat
Loaf). And concept albums aren't always prog indicators (The Who,
despite "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia", have never been regarded as prog).
But Focus, despite sticking to 3/4 and 4/4, and doing nothing prog
except fusing rock, classical, and jazz, were one of the major prog
bands in the 70s (along with Yes and Genesis, but funnily enough Pink
Floyd didn't get mentioned early one, not till DSOTM came out).

Early Purple had a lot of classical influence.

Queen's second and fourth albums especially were thoroughly prog, and
their first and third had plenty of prog components.

Marillion have odd time signatures, concept albums, and keyboards. What
more do they need to be prog? What was the last Marillion song that you
listened to?

and to follow on after watching the last hour of this documentary. Towards
the end they all had a jolly good laugh over Tull winning a Grammy for the
best heavy rock album, with Crest of a Knave, edging out Metallica.

Rock classification is utterly fucked.

I think I'm missing something. Well, I know I'm missing a lot but
specifically the connection between Ged and punk.

I seem to remember (apropos Ged) that TOG sold him a Jawa 350 outfit
that Ged arrived to collect with his (young) son. Ged had never ridden/driven/
piloted an outfit before and somewhere not far from Sutton had decided that
a first journey from Sutton to Manchesterish (?) was more than he fancied
doing, especially with his son in the sidecar. So he did what he thought
necessary; pulled the HT cable from the plug and called the AA.

Sadly the AA man found the fault and had to be persuaded to un-find it and
drag the outfit to Ged's home.

Just had a look and sadly while I can find follow ups to TOG's post (in
October 199-fucking-9) he x-noarchived his posts so they've (mostly)
disappeared into the ether; a great shame since the fucker could write.

A mortal sin for UKRM.

That is something of a tragedy. We who read them originally will just
have to console ourselves with the sense that "we were there"

And put it down to the same paranoia that meant he wouldn't use bank
ATMs

Great story. Right now, I don't remember reading about it, but of
course at the time I would have done. Too bad I can't go back and
refresh my memory now.

Again, such a minefield, old school hip-hop vs the chart shite classed as hip-hop these days.

Right up there with noticing Bob Vylan (no - not a typo) making the cover of Kerrang recently, that just confused me. Always assumed it was a metal rag, but to see a grime/punk outfit make the cover was a whoa moment !! (This will mean absolutely nothing to most of the clientele of Chez UKRM).
