Probably a sensible/convenient way of moving floodwater about to where
it can be more easily pumped out.

they did similar in lead mines in the Peak District. You can still go down
one and take a little boat to the main cavern with some impressive
stalagmites & stalactites. Lots of water running about so some sort of
pumping system needed, but the water made transporting ore to the shaft
easier.

Well the wanderer has returned. A last minute flap when the train he had
planned to use from Paris via Rouen to Dieppe was cancelled from Rouen.
The next one wasn't for 3 hours and only arrived shortly after the
official last check in time for the ferry he was booked on. Dashed from
the station to the Ibis budget where he had left his bike. Luckily that
went smoothly and he retrieved it quickly from the secure storage. Only
2 kms from the ferry terminal, so his bad knee held out. Managed to make
it half an hour before sailing time and at least he had phoned them
earlier to see what the absolute deadline really was. Mr Wilson will
have experience of that on Poole Cherbourg - as have I.

Then the clot nearly blew it by not having completed a locator form in
advance. We had told him he needed one, but apparently he got misled by
the various announcement. Got a bit shouty it seems, so I'm surprised
they actually let him on (after doing one there and then on his phone).

No problem getting his bicycle on to the Newhaven-Lewes and Lewes-London
Bridge trains and just a short pedal back from there to his gaff.

Several life lessons learned and when he attempts it next time I suspect
the itinerary will be more realistic.

He says to let all here know that the offers of help from UKRMers were
very much appreciated.

Speedwell cavern. We often went to the Blue John mines when I was a
kid (my mum was studying geology with the OU). Back then you used to
be able to pick up pebble-sized pieces of the stuff on the gravel
paths all around the area.

I think it is the fact these were below sea level, and under the river
Dee is what he finds remarkable.

Basically a tunnel under a river, for boats not cars/trains.

While that is/may be true. I feel there is somewhat a size difference
between those streams and the River Dee :-)

I was going to stop in Parkgate on another trip but failed to be able to
park. Oh the irony.
I'll have another try then next time I head that way. Its on the bit I
have yet to walk.

Yes, been there, done that - amazing place.
It wasn't until I found out about the one at Neston that I started to
research underground canals and was amazed to find out there were loads
of them - including another one at the Magpie Mine in the peaks and one
at Holywell on the 'other side' of the Dee.

Somewhere I have a map the RHCS sent me when I queried it.

Oh yeah. Through the Middle East? Whoah. And she has interviews with a
couple of other female world travelers - Lea Rieck and Heather Sinclair.

I have to wonder about her finances. What does it cost to ship bikes all
over the world? She runs out of money, so flies home, or only has 100
euros, so flies to Oz. Maybe her family bails her out.

she has nearly a million subscribers on Youtube. Some videos have been
viewed over a million times and most have >300k views. Her own website is
full of merchandise and she has regular features in other media.

she is a brand that has been monetised. I doubt she needs charity from
family etc. I doubt she pays for her own bikes and kit now.

Things might have been different in the first year or two...
