Russia was in a horrible state after the collapse of the USSR and the implosion of their economy.
There was a rich guy named Zeleny who was from Harvard, and I remember he so gloated at that time (early 2000s) that the worst-off Russian women had to become prostitutes.

Putin or Stasi or whatever has changed matters for the better, much better. Putin put a tax on the stolen oil, which was given free. That helped Russia, but annoyed the beneficiaries.

Russia is wonderful, I was there for 7 days in 2018. I would love to live in St. Petersburg. My Russia visit was an eye-opening experience. Putin is hugely respected from what my tour guides said, and Stalin is making a comeback.
