Fell off a ladder yesterday, backwards, and landed on my left shoulder blade
on a brick (the corner of it).

After a 3 hour wait to be seen, 1 hour for an x-ray then a further 6 hour projected wait for a doctor / nurse practitioner; which i skipped, coming back this morning and 'only' waiting 5 hours... the verdict is in; broken left scapula.

Oh well, matches the right from 20 years ago.

Ooof. I had my big ladder incident quite a few years ago now, and still
have a large scar, a big chunk of titanium, several bolts, the head of
my right hand radius missing and an arm that won't go fully straight.

I try to be extra careful on ladders these days.

For my summer hols I decided to paint the entire outside of the house.
This involved some yucky extra high bits for the soffits^H^H^H <googles>
fascia boards (that I really don't like). The worst bit involves a
separate ladder hooked over a ridge. Last time I bodged it with ropes
but this time I invested in a proper ridge hook.

So, one ladder up to the gutter level, step over on to the ladder on the
ridge, carry on. One side went fine. On the other side, the first ladder
arrangement was slightly different. I watched a couple of videos and
considered putting an eye bolt in the wall to secure the first ladder,
but decided it would be ok without it.

Can of paint in one hand, the other hand for me, I went. Transfer one
leg and (luckily) most of my weight onto the roof ladder, and, the first
ladder slipped away. Somehow I'd climbed up one rung too high and got it
all wrong. Somehow I stayed on the roof ladder but half a tin of paint
spilt down the roof tiles. This is not completely dissimilar to my first
incident of years ago. I'm pretty sure I won't do this painting job again.

Ladder incidents...

Many years ago I used to fit two-way radio systems and had an agreement with my employer that they'd pay me about half the going 'professional' rate to put up base-station antenna at the weekends. A saving for them and money in my pocket so I was quite used to regularly working on ladders.

And with familiarity... etc.

I lived in a victorian semi-detached close to a main road on a hill leading out of Bath. There were gales one night and I lay awake listening to the (old) roof creak and tiles shift. The following morning I looked at the roof and one of the tiles around the chimney had shifted and needed to be reseated and resecured. So... I called my brother and he turned up with a ladder. It started to rain...

The ladder wouldn't work resting on the gutter so I rested it below the gutter and climbed up it. At the top I had to lean back, over the gutter and creep onto the roof; I was about 35 years younger then and quite athletic so it wasn't an issue. Got onto the roof and it was like a fucking ice-rink.. Worked up the coping stones on the edge of the roof and then when almost at the chimney one moved and I slipped. Blind panic and scrabbling and I got hold of the chimney breast and managed to reseat the clay tile but couldn't secure it with a nail (since that would mean lifting the tiles below and there was no way I was fucking around more than I had).

The wind started to blow. The lampost in front of me started to sway in the wind. The rain came down harder and I realised I was soaked. I was cold, wet and frankly freaked out from slipping on the roof earlier, I looked down and realised I couldn't see the ladder so I'd have to somehow get to the edge of the roof without slipping, sliding and dying and once I'd done that I'd have to lower myself off the icy surface 'into the void' and search for the ladder with my feet. We didn't have a rope... I sat cold and miserable and through chattering teeth I asked my brother to call the fire brigade...

After about 15 minutes they arrived, when they were about 200m away they turned on their siren to get the neighbours out. They got me off the roof with ease and sarcasm. Some fuckers took pictures.

I've had a few as well, although oddly enough I've never broken a
major arm or leg bone. Only one of my hospital visits has been a
result of a motorbike accident, though, which might go some way to
explaining it.

Total number of bone breaks must be well over 30, 20+ in that one
smash.

I really should just keep my mouth shut on this before lady luck figures

What the hell: I've had a few MC incidents, a ton of surfing incidents,
and plenty of other opportunities for broken bones, but AFAICR, nothing
more than a minor bone crack. OTOH, many of those incidents have
resulted in major soft tissue damage. I spent 2 months in a hospital due
to a 3rd degree burn that wasn't detected til late. My right eye tear
ducts were trashed for life. Plus a ruptured spinal disc, 4 surgeries
for surfer's ear, etc, etc.

The human body is nothing if not fragile and repairable.
