In USA terminology, a compound fracture is one that breaks the skin. Or
at least it was back when I was in the Boy Scouts. I see it is also
referred to as an open fracture.

Same here and five years out now, I do do a bit from my penultimate
trade for pocket money.

I can take part of my private pension which will double the state one
which will see me through until the Inheritance Tax free allowance
closes and I have to make a decision with the rest.

I've gambled that I last 8 years, before that Aviva make a gain.

Similar here, but about half the time. Had planned to take a sabbatical for 3 months
and then the pandemic hit. Started job hunting after 6 months and fast found that:
a) I didn't really *want* to work much, certainly not in any managerial role.
b) No one really wanted to give me a junior role because they assumed I wouldn't work.
(apparently applying for jobs at a significantly junior level to the previous one is worrying)
c) The only job offer I got (BT) was fast rescinded when they went into a hiring freeze.

I ended up quite pleased when the BT job didn't happen.

It's a lot cheaper not working than working *but* the pandemic has really helped...

Unsurprisingly a significant proportion of what you earn is actually spent
getting to work to earn it or having smart clobber. Retirement has been
remarkably cheap, especially being confined to close proximity to home and most
leisure activities closed.

It should be a web-form front end, shouldn't it, so that all UKRMers can answer a simply survey, and then something behind the scenes can run the calculations, apply the factors, maintain a master data table, and then serve interesting snippets plus a calculated rank at time of submission. Add some login credentials and one could return and see their placing change after subsequent entries...and I suppose, add new injuries as they occur.

Shouldn't be that tough. Who's going to have a whack at it?

I think you may still be misremebering. 'Complex', not compound, was
always used (I _think_ in the US too, as some of the material I've
seen over the years was defintely from there) for anything that broke
the skin, aka your 'open fracture' and/or internal organs or blood
vessels.

To my knowledge compound was always more literal, i.e. referring to
multiple breaks to a single bone.

Well yes, but the same logic could be applieed to anyone who's ever
had flu or a whole host of other diseases, or indeed any sort of
infection requiring antibiotics. Even as little as 70 years ago many
of them would gave died.

Yes, we're 'locky' that we live in an era where medicine has advanced
sufficiently to keep us alive and functioning, but how much luckier
would we have been fifty or a hundred years from now?

Also, we have contemporaries with similar injuries who had much less
fortunate outcomes; dead men/women don't tell anecdotes...

No, I am definitely not mis-remembering. "Compound fracture" was and
still is common parlance here for a fracture that breaks the skin.

That would certainly make sense, but I have a very strong memory of
what a "compound fracture" looked like from the first time I saw a
drawing of it in my Boy Scout handbook (ca. 1964, handed down to me
by my two older brothers). No illustration here, in the 1911 edition
on Project Gutenberg, but the text refers to it:

I wasn't really thinking of stopping work completely, but perhaps a
change of career to something more outdoors and fewer hours.
Surprisingly, that doesn't pay as well as swearing at computers.
