In the excellent recent TV series, A Short History in Living Longer",
the chap who penicillin was first tested on had an infection due to a
scratch from a rose bush! He died when the penicillin, which was very
difficult to manufacture, ran out.

I still firmly recall my elderly GP ~75 in about 1988 telling me to start on the
double course of antibiotics and come back to see him Saturday for what appeared
to be sepsis in my lymph system. My 'Saturday, you sure?' elicited a response
along the lines of 'young man when I was a new doctor all I could have advised
you would to do would be to go home and put you affairs in order'

fracture that breaks the skin.

I remember arguing with Matt Cull on Ixion about fractures and breaks,
when he insisted that he had had a fracture that wasn't a break (or vice
versa). He wouldn't believe that "fracture" and "break" were synonyms.

I think so, yes. He used to ride (I think) an Aprilia RS250 and IIRC claimed
to 'weekly commute' (from Bournemouth/Portsmouth?) to somewhere in
Germany (Hamburg? Hannover?). Some IT job or other.
