I think they GREPed a traditional news spool. Google Groups started in
2001, taking over the DejaNews operation founded in 1995.

Other people have been archiving Usenet, and I'm thumbing through 1983
at the moment (it's a 40yr anniversary thing).

I've got a stats script. It runs off the local news spool on a system which
has a Usenet server, it doesn't rely on an external source. I've posted the
output from it in a separate thread.
