Yes Darren, smooth surfaced polycarbonate plastics, you know, the ones
it was designed to work with. Amazing, huh?

Polycarbonates have extremely good transparency, high resistance to heat
and impact as well as the ability to easily mould into complex shapes.

There are actually two products, the liquid has different properties
compared to the old formula. Brasso generally uses silica dioxide for
its abrasive properties but the Aussie version uses Kaolin instead.
Though still an abrasive, this might be a factor in the reduced
effectiveness of the Aussie variety.

I had a stone break a headlamp on a VK Commodore, a long time ago so I
can't remember how much it cost.
Someone told me that a LED headlamp for the WRX was several thousand
dollars, crazy price but they were excellent headlamps.

It's still pretending to be the old Brasso, it just doesn't work anymore

I thought I had some Silvo in the cupboard here. Appears I was mistaken,
only stainless steel cleaners in there. Don't use Brasso and haven't
done so for 50+ years so I couldn't say how effective the current crop
of product is but, like most *new and improved* products, it's likely
less effective and more expensive than before.

Brasso has *always* been a liquid, that requires a good shaking before use.. However, a liquid it was/is!.

Cars that were 10+ years old, no doubt. Not a lot different to here
really. The headlight finish is usually good for 10 years except under
extreme circumstances. You get those extreme circumstances here but
usually in low quality cars. Be interesting to see how Chinese car
headlights and other plastics fare in the hot Aussie sun. My guess is -
5 years will see them showing issues, especially if this is any guide to
their quality;

https://www.queenslandjudgments.com.au/caselaw/qcat/2021/316

Of course, you can get the usual precis of such matters here;

Ahem, evidence in abundance in forums on the internet that points to the
contrary. For instance, the Aussie product is *different* to the OS (UK,
US?) versions since kaolin is the primary abrasive medium here, not so
elsewhere. Kaolin, BTW, is the abrasive used in *toothpaste*. There are
also indications that, for health and safety reasons, some of the more
toxic components have been toned down, removed or substituted.

Apparenly around 2009. I bought a new bottle (plastic now vs.
the older metal), and am truly dissapointed because IT NO
LONGER WORKS. The formula is water-based with ammonia, vs.
the old petroleum-based formula. The new stuff appears to have
the micro silica granules because there did appear to be major
sedimentation in the bottle. It is no longer listed as an
ingredient, probably because it is not toxic. I'm not sure if
they changed the granule size, but the new product does NOT
immediately produce black copper oxide the same way as the old
formula. Of course, my goal here is not simply to whine. Although
whining is a component of the set of my reasons for being here,
I would also like to ask if anyone knows if a suitable substitute
in available. Is it also possible to buy microcrystalline silica
(or carborundum, etc.)? I have Varsol, and I know how to use it.

I noticed the change and Brasso is a poor imitation of what it
used to be, Besides metal polish, it used to be great for making
plastic watch crystals, plastic coin holders, some sunglasses
sparkle like brand new. now it puts hundreds of tiny visible
scratches on the surface. in others words, the the abrasive
ingredient is also different. Not even close. Thet might as well
quit making Brasso altogether. True Brasso NO LONGER EXISTS!

Any amount of such comment on forums all over. General consensus, Brasso
isn't as good as it used to be. Obviously the manufacturers slogan; "new
and improved" is referring primarily to their bottom line, their profit
margins.
