Bingo! That's exactly what I was wanting. I was struggling to understand
the Excel 'custom format' syntax. PS: It actually needs to be 1":"# with the
colon in quotes, or "1:"# with the whole literal string in quotes.

And extending it to "1:"###,###,### puts the commas in - and pleasingly,
only the correct number of commas. I was expecting it to give me
1:000,050,000 !

Puts me in mind of a randy headmaster I once knew, who was caught in
delicto flagrante with the fpubby secretary. When he came out of his
room after an indecent interval the corridor was decorated with a number
of inflated prophylactics, suitably adorned with smiley faces &c.

I do not know what sort of school you went to, but I remember, well
thumbed, copies of ahem magazines, some more coy than others, being
handed round between the boys. This was in the late 50's and early
sixties.
