When the butter is too hard for the bread then slice off the amount you
need, put it on the edge of the plate, put the plate in the microwave on
full for about 3-5 seconds and voila - spreadable butter.

If the butter melts in 'holes' then get a better microwave.

Anchor is no longer from New Zealand. From Westbury, Wiltshire according

We currently have a tub of this in the fridge and it's awesome.

https://www.landolakes.com/products/butter-spreads/butter-with-olive-oil-and-sea-salt/

We keep real butter in a covered butter dish, not in the fridge.

Same here. Then he scheduled me for an oncologist meeting in
mid-January. I'm sitting there, the doc walks in 20 minutes late, looks
at my data, says "OK. You have leukemia. Come back in 4 months." Then he
walked out.

Yeah. I think he felt uncomfortable talking about it. Google says people
have a 65% chance of living 5 years after diagnosis. I'll probably die
from something else before that. 3-4 more years would make me an average
white American male.

yes, such as riding a motorcycle or being collateral damage whilst visiting
Europe as WW3 erupts. Are you still fluent in Russian?

Hah. I've forgotten a lot over the last 50+ years, but I still remember
"Fuck your mother!" along with a few other profanities.

It's interesting. My last trip was to Turkey and coming back, I came
through Ukraine as far as Odessa, which has a long history itself. Then
I rode through Transnistria, which I'd never heard of. And now it seems
it is one of the places Russia had troops stationed for the invasion.

I've ridden through Ukraine twice now, and the people have always been
friendly, despite my opening words usually being 'sorry for speaking
Russian" before asking a simpl question.

Crossing from Russia to Ukraine in 2017, at a small border post, was the
when I realised how finely balanced it was there.

The Russian border had been very low key and swiftly passed.

At the Ukranian post it was fully manned by an army unit. There was
camoflaged large bore weapons and our paper work taken away for
inspection (I don't think I have ever let it all go out of my site
before). Passport stamped with non of the usual facial recognition.

I've only been there once. Didn't try speaking to them in anything apart
from English and (bad, very limited) German.

I didn't think it was that different from other 'proper' borders when we did
Belarus/Ukraine and then Ukraine/Russia in 2019.

Crossing from Belarus into Ukraine took an hour to leave Belarus and
about an hour and a quarter to enter Ukraine. Quite a decent border
crossing really... except it was quite busy and at the Ukrainian immigration
desk the woman couldn't / wouldn't speak anything but Ukranian or Russian
and after about five minutes told us to 'go away'. So we stepped to one side
and let the queue subside a little and then one of the Ukranians crossing the
border translated for us. When she asked for the purpose of our visit and we
said 'holiday'... our helpful translator told us her reaction was 'no one comes
to Ukraine on holiday' (with a derisive snort).

Leaving from Ukraine into Russia (at Hlukhiv) took about 30 minutes to leave
Ukraine with the only remarkable things being that they wanted to read the
frame number of my bike and used a torch to do so (headstock obscured by tank
and other 'stuff'') oh, and they wanted to know if I had any drugs and mimed
injecting into the neck to help with the translation... Entering Russia, however
took 4 hours and 20 minutes but that was mostly because a computer used in
one stage to print essential paperwork kept crashing... it was running Windows
95 FFS! In 2019...

The time in Ukraine was great, the people were friendly and the country was
impressively large and flat. We had planned to go back in 2020 but... well...

Not sure if I'll ever get the chance to go to Russia again now. Shame really
because I did like it and always hoped one day I'd do the big trip to Mongolia.

Oh well.

I had similar in the UK only the jumped up offcial asking, "papers please"
was not amused by seeing some tourists. "Nobody comes here except coach
loads of Americans."

This was the early 1990s and the official was an army corporal from
Basingstoke on duty in Armagh. I had no papers, just a Midland Bank credit
card as no passport/photo ID needed to cross the Irish Sea back then.

I've put my plans to learn Russian on hold indefinitely, as I can't see it coming in particularly useful.

I'm going to give up trying to plan holidays, too. It never seems to end well. Was going to go to Beirut and it blew up. Tried to go to Ukraine and the car conked out, then the country exploded. Maybe I should just plan to go to places I don't like the look of, out of spite.

Only time I can think of that mine's been taken away was entering Bosnia by bus.

> Passport stamped with non of the usual facial recognition.

Same there too. The driver's mate took everyone's passports in a stack, went for a smoke with the border staff while we stayed on the bus, and brought them back ten minutes later all freshly stamped, with not a glance at any of the passengers.

Mind you, getting out of Croatia a few minutes earlier had been a right faff. Everyone off the bus, lined up at the border post, up to the booth one by one, and they seemed well grumpy about a few of them. And that was *leaving*.

A colleague at work earned a reputation of visiting places just before
they fell to pieces, politically.

At passport control I can't remember it being out of my site.

I can remember several occasions of hotels wanting to 'hold' it to register me
(St Petersburg, Beijing and Venice(!) I'm sure there were others.) Also, bizarrely
the R&D dept of Telecom Italia held my passport at the gatehouse when I
visited once- the man on the gatehouse was in a uniform with a gun on his
belt.

Trust me, my Russian was(is) bad.
I think the same appraoch is needed with German use there as well.

Ah, that was the one we used in 2017, I used the one on the main drag in
2013, which was a busy border (about 90 mins to cross both sides).

Oddly enough it's not unusual (well, it's happened to me perhaps three
or four tines over the years) when entering Switzerland for them to
take your passport, driving licence and car reg documents away and
presumably run them through the computer to check they're all
consistent. Not so much to validate who you are and whether you're
allowed to enter, but more to check whether there's any outstanding
fines, judgments or warrants. At least that's always been my
assumption.
