Taking a ferry from Turkey to a Greek island some time in the '90s,
we had to surrender passports to the port authority the night before.
The next morning there were a hundred or so people waiting on the
quayside; somebody arrived with the stack of passports and went through
them, calling out names and throwing the passport to whoever put their
hand up.

On arriving back in Turkey a few days later, Turkish customs went
through everybody's luggage and confiscated all the alcohol.

Which does remind me of something from years ago, when I took the Mensa
test. Took it in Nottingham, with about 20 others, and we said we'd meet
up when we got the results. So, a few weeks later, the results came out,
and we met up at some pub on Maid Marion Way. I got there and there was
one other already there. I asked him how he'd scored, and he'd got 161.
Told him I'd got 163 (because it was true). I said something about
rehearsing later, and he asked what I played. Turned out he played
guitar. A few minutes later, one of the ladies who'd taken it came in,
and we exchanged scores again (158 or so IIRC). I asked her if she
played a musical instrument, and indeed she did - keyboards. Then
another of our number came in looking a bit downcast. "How did you do?"
I said, and he shook his head and said "scored 85". We paused for a
minute, then the guitarist asked "what sticks do you use?".

Butter and beards don't mix well. (Dairy Butter not Hairy Butter). It leaves a lingering whiff, no matter how much scrubbing is performed. It does attract cats though.

In various different bands over the years I have sung, played guitar,
played bass, played the drums. So, I'm not quite sure where that leaves me.

Mostly when I was at uni I used to sneak into sound checks for quite a
few gigs and I always *loved* the sound of a mic'ed up drum kit in an
empty hall.

I yearned to have a go and I did get the opportunity at a company event
to do it. All hooked up to a 30kW PA I was in heaven.

Well yes, it sounds pretty disgusting, but it seems quite acceptable
to put all sorts of flavoured syrup, almost any quantity of variously
prepared milk or cream, dairy and non-dairy, so if they're all OK,
then why not this?

Or to put it another way, I like my coffee black with sugar, so
anything else added sounds disgucting, and I can't really see how this
is different from the disgusting (to me) concoctions that they sell on
evry high street.

Uggh, sugar!

I used to take sugar in tea, weaned myself of it years ago. Much nicer
taste.

Coffee is also spoilt by sugar.

The jury is out on where I am with milk, I can drink both with or without.

Black Covfefe with dark maple syrup is the way forward. Tried it about 5 years ago and addicted now.

Never liked tea, but quite enjoy a handful of mint from the garden boiled up, settles the old stomach down a treat. Helps with my trapped wind splendidly.

My colleagues in Mumbai persuaded me to try Jaggeri<sp>, black espresso type
coffee with palm sugar also called Jaggeri[1] terribly sweet but in a different
way to straight white sugar.

[1] Called Gula Melaka local to me.

Exactly the reaction I expected, from others as well, but sugar, mik,
cream etc. are all generally considered 'normal' additions to coffee,
so I don't see what makes the butter/oil you mention any different.

(Personally I can't stand milk in coffee, even just the smell makes me
queezy, but one man's meat, and all that.)
