Eh? So do you also think that 86 degF sounds hotter than 30 degC?

I doubt it, he was serious in his response.

The Yam dealer we found next was very disparaging about him and HD.
Something about brain cells.

Similar age, but not a crossover I've moved to.

I am happy buying fruit/veg and meat in Kg though and the weights make
more sense to me than oz.

Now, if only we could switch to KM/H I'd be happier.

I don't think I've ever actually measured my waist in either inches or
cm, but simply in whether 32-inch Levis 501s fit comfortably or if I
need to break out the 33s. I do still have a pair of almost unused
31-inchers I bought the last time I visited SF, just for a reality
check if I'm feeling like I've lost weight.

I don't but most people are simple minded. I have the drawings for my gaff all
in metric but the advertisement was all in SQ feet as is the local property site
URL:https://www.propertyguru.com.my/apartment-for-rent/in-georgetown-pg027
albeit as far as I am aware this is the only imperial hangover, the country
switched to metric in the 70s after the UK.

No idea. All the booze only bars have been closed as far as I am aware since
beginning of 2020 blamed on the plague, albeit if they sell grub they're most
likely open. I was really was not a user of the bars big time before hand, I'll
buy a bottle of beer with a meal in a kopitiam. Google suggests the Hong Kong
bar is still going.

I remember reading quite a long time ago, probably in the mid-to-late
70's timeframe, about how Imperial (non-CNC) machine tools could be
adapted very simply to read in hundreths of a millimeter because
0.050 inch (typical lathe cross slide distance for one full turn)
was 1.27 millimeter, so a simple replacement of the crank wheel's
scale or even an adhesive label with 127 divisions would enable
reading directly in 1/100 mm units.

I realize that this is only one small aspect of machine tools but
the simplicity of it made this stick in my memory. Thread cutting
could also be corrected by switching in a small collection of gears,
without needing to replace the feed screw, IIRC.

All this reminds me, I have to retrieve my grandfather's lathe (he
was a gunsmith) from the basement of my mother's house which is going
to be listed for sale very soon.

No one I know has a strong enough back to be trusted with any part
of the move, hence the need to hire movers...

I took this in 1984. It's somewhere around Penang. I hope it's not a

What would the chances be, eh? Seems like most of the old pics were
destroyed by a fire in 2004.

Having said that... Far right, third one down, could actually be a
group of us from the MS Strathalvie when we were there n 1977 (got the
years wrong - it was 77 and 84, now I've remembered the ship I was on,
and that the second visit was on a holiday 7 ears later). Furthest
right in the picture reminds me very much of the electrical officer -
the tache sticks in my memory - and the furthest left sitting at the
bar looks like it could well be me.

Unlikely, but it's a definite possible.

I've forced myself to start weighing in kilos, but I still have to convert it to stones and pounds to have any idea what it means.

Absolutely no idea how tall I am in metrics though. And if I did I'd have to convert to feet and inches for the same reason. Not that it's changed much in the last thirty years.

It's how cheap Chinese lathes convert from imperial to metric, or vice
versa, I believe. My lathe (Chinese, cheap) has a second wheel in the
lead screw train that I've never used; could be for that.

I had to convert the waist, but I've crept up to nearly 86Kg and 91cm,
but at least I'm 185cm tall. And big-boned, of course.

Hah. Same weight (as you), 184cm (ish).

My height does actually vary. As well as the normal daily variation,
where most people will be a centimetre or so shorter if they've been
on their feet all day, mine also depends on how my back is feeling -
the more painful, the more tensed up, the less upright I stand. I
think it comes to most people as they age, but I'm fighting it by
keeping as fit as skiing can make me.
