It would have taken a lot of effort to lose money in the stock market
during the Obama presidency. DJIA: +12.10%, S&P 500: 13.84%, NASDAQ:
18.38%. Not quite as good as under Clinton, but better than under Trump.

And paying for treatment? I would not want to do that. I'd rather my mother's insurance pay for that. My mom has great health insurance. Now of course if forced to do it, I would pay for it. But I would not want to do it or be happy and proud of doing it. It would just be a necessity of life. As for buying your mom a home. I guess good for you. But my mom has more than enough money to buy her own house. So no need to do that. I think it is best when a parent manages money correctly and can pay for necessities and luxuries too. No need for children to step in and help. Parents are supposed to be role models. And usually, when parents are good, the children are good too. Kind of inherited. In your case Tommy, it seems your mother was not good with money. And from your many

I know Tommy boy has claimed time again how he lost all his money under Obama. But I am having a hard time figuring out his finances. He made a fortune under Bush 2 I presume. And then he lost everything. Zero under Obama.. So fortune to ZERO. Then he became a millionaire again under Trump. Then ZERO again under Biden. My problem is how do you go from ZERO under Obama to millionaire under Trump? According to the mathematics I learned in school, no matter what your compound rate is and no matter how long you compound, if you start with ZERO as Tommy says he did after Obama, you will end up with ZERO. Multiply anything times ZERO and you get ZERO. But Tommy somehow went from ZERO after Obama to Millionaire under Trump. How? How do you get to Millionaire when you start at ZERO? But I guess Tommy did not take mathematics in high school.

Not necessary in California. Proposition 13 allowed a parent to transfer
ownership of a property to a child without triggering a reassessment in
value (that changed slightly last year with only the Prop 13 assessed
value + $1 million being exempt from reassessment).

Right now is a good time for people wanting to cash out because the
State Legislature and the Governor just passed two laws that are
significantly increasing housing prices. SB9 allows owners of a single
family home to split the lot and build two houses, plus two accessory
dwelling units, on the two new parcels. While a typical homeowner would
not have the cash to pay off an existing mortgage and then do a
teardown, lot split, and construct two houses and two ADUs, real estate
investors would have that cash and could make a tidy profit doing that.

Of course once you cash out you would have to take the money and move to
much less expensive area.

But how does that get around the federal income laws? There are federal gift laws. If you give something, money or property to someone, the recipient must pay taxes on the gift they receive if its above $15,000 currently. Transferring title would be a gift. And trigger the federal income tax laws about gifts.

I understand your California law is to avoid reassessment for property tax purposes. OK. Federal tax laws don't care about that.

Well, Tommy has wept and cried, more then once, about all the money he
lost during the Obama Administration so one can only assume that it is
evidence of his ability as an investor.

And then he lost everything. Zero under Obama.

Yes, but our very own Tommy has claimed a lot of things. Most of which
have been demonstrated to be wrong (:-)

And from your many postings on this forum,

Or the cost to exercise the option was one million? You had options on 100,000 bushels of soybeans at $10. And I have mentioned this before, but did she declare this income on her income taxes? You do know the gift tax has a limit of $15,000 now. So any amount that is above that, is taxed for the recipient. So did she and you CHEAT the government out of taxes due? You gave her $985,000 of income. She owed taxes on this income. Are you a tax cheat and felon Tommy?

We can do without your purposely misreading my posting. I said the WORTH upon which I was paying taxes.

One possibility: Tom was so convinced Obama would ruin the world that he
dove heavily into selling stocks short.

This sort of speculation would seem to fit Tom's attitudes and behavior.
For example, it jibes with his constant speculating on Craigslist bikes.

The additional motivation would come from his poisonous attitude toward
Obama - and indeed, toward anything not approved by the far right.

Sorry, it's too cold for me right now, Lou.

Why do you bother reading what displeases you so?

And why do you call me out in particular? About 90% of the posts are by
others.

I can’t speak for Lou, but after having filtered out all posts BY Tom, and
all replies TO Tom, the majority of off-topic “I don’t care to read this”
posts are ABOUT Tom. I’m not yet ready to invoke a thermonuclear killfile
which deletes all posts where Tom’s name is even mentioned, so I also hope
the discussion drifts away from that topic as well.

Frank doesn't have a life. He is overwhelmed with jealousy that I actually worked as an engineer. That I worked on the cutting edge of medical technology and you can't go into a hospital today that doesn't have instruments or later generations of those I designed and/or programmed. I am happy to have been of some use. So I guess that is what bothers Frank (and Jeff) the most.

You are correct Ralph, so I will tell you what. I will filter out John, Frank, Jeff, Russell and Flunky and only address bicycle related postings.

Well, thanks for the compliment - even with the hedge word "supposed."

But phrasing it as you did reads as a rather specific attack on me, with
the non-specific others thrown in as an afterthought. And I doubt it's
due to language differences. I suspect in Dutch the implication would be
the same.

OK, I'll admit to a personal problem. It's application is not limited to
this group, but it is certainly in effect here:

More than most people, I tend to notice mistakes. And by reflex, I have
a desire to point them out, to correct them.

I'll beg for sympathy by noting that correcting mistakes was a major
part of my job for decades. I taught subjects that required lots of
difficult and detailed computation. My policy was to collect homework
_very_ frequently and grade it in detail. Collecting it frequently kept
students from slacking off then cramming for tests; and detailed grading
gave the frequent feedback and corrections most students needed.

As a result, I think my brain's mistake-catching system is
overdeveloped. It focuses not only on numbers, but on facts, logic and
more. (Hell, I congratulate myself on not correcting spelling mistakes.)

I'll try to be better. But I'm not optimistic.

You do know the gift tax has a limit of $15,000 now. So any amount that is above that, is taxed for the recipient. So did she and you CHEAT the government out of taxes due? You gave her $985,000 of income. She owed taxes on this income. Are you a tax cheat and felon Tommy?

And Proposition 13 which is still in effect in Alameda County prevented any inflation of home values upon which to pay taxes. And from your many postings on this foru

Hey, I’ve got the same type of brain. But note that in an academic
situation, especially as a teacher, correcting other people’s mistakes is a
good thing. Hell, they’re PAYING you to do it, even if they don’t seem
appreciative at the time. However, in most other parts of the real world,
there are two criteria:
1) Is it appreciated?
2) Will it do any good?

You don’t always have to meet #1, but if you can’t meet either of them,
it’s probably not worth doing. It’s the old Steven Covey “Circle of
concern” vs “Circle of influence” thing.
