So they are mixed together to get gasoline of various octane ratings without having to use lead. My teeth have been bad since I was a child. And this is no doubt because at the time tetraethyllead was used as an octane booster in gasoline and it poisons the body by taking the place of calcium and hence children born before the ban on that compound often had very bad teeth and weak bones. I managed to avoid the weak bones but I have spent a fortune on my teeth.

I think it's more that the IQ keeps dropping but one doesn't realize it. Tommy is in denial that his IQ was _ever_ anything less than extremely intelligent. Lead poisoning explains it all.

Hmmm... I was born in 1948. Lead was banned in California effective
in 1992 and in the US in 1996. I was 44 years old when lead in
gasoline went out of fashion in California. I grew up in Smog
Angeles, the epicenter of air pollution.

I'm 74 years old. My teeth are in fairly good shape. I lost all 4
wisdom teeth to amalgam fillings that fell or rotted out. Of the
remaining teeth, one tooth required a root canal. The rest are
normal. Cavity and gum problems were trivial, until I started
drinking carbonated sodas and started to accumulate cavities.

So, why are my teeth in fairly good shape while yours are rotten?

Hint: Between about 1967 and 2019, I never used tooth paste. I
brushed my teeth with water and nothing else. I recently started
brushing with 1.1% sodium fluoride prescription toothpaste after my
dentist discovered that I had some soft spots in the enamel on the
back of some teeth. It's not heredity. My fathers lost all his teeth
by age 50 and my mother was constantly getting dental work done.

In the early 90s one of my children complained that brushing her teeth hurt her stomach. I don't remember how old she was, somewhere in the 3 - 5 range maybe.

It seemed a strange complaint but by weird coincidence I read an interview with a brass player from the Boston Symphony. Teeth are important to a trumpet or trombone player, obviously. Part of his advice to young aspiring musicians was to brush your teeth but be extra careful to rinse all the toothpaste out afterwords.

My child started doing that and her stomach upset went away. Who knows?

Jeffie believes that he can give a partial story and use it to disprove scientific research. The research was so overwhelming that despite the power of the automobile and petroleum industries, they were forced to stop using tetraethyllead and motors had a temporary reduction in power until other forms of anti-knock could be developed.

But Jeffie is a science entirely unto himself. He can tell us all about bicycles despite never having much to do with them and now being entirely unable to ride.

Thanks for possibly solving a minor problem for me. Since I hadn't
been using tooth paste for most of my life, I didn't experience any
stomach problems from swallowing tooth paste. However, when I started
using the 1.1% sodium fluoride toothpaste, I would experience
occasional minor stomach aches at night. I originally attributed them
to my bad habit of munching something before going to sleep, but it
seems that not rinsing might be a possible cause. I'll try rinsing
and not swallowing and see what happens.

crystals and to polish glasses. Hmmm...

I somewhat recently saw a video about what astronauts do for teeth brushing.. They have the option of swallowing or spitting out the foam after brushing. NO rinsing with water for astronauts due to the limited water available on a space shuttle or lunar spacecraft. So for adult astronauts, swallowing the foam for a week or two or so is not considered dangerous.

NASA developed a non-fluoride toothpaste in the 70s -- the ingredient is
called nano-hydroxyapatite, and has been picked up by some commercial
manufacturers. Swallowing stannous fluoride toothpaste is really not
recommended, just read your toothpaste tube.

See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4252862/ for more on HA
toothpaste.

How do you swallow toothpaste? And today I use a toothpaste composed of baking soda just as I have since childhood when no one would spend money on a special toothpaste instead of the baking soda in the cupboard. I was in the Air Force before I saw Fluoride Toothpaste and never saw the need for it.

Way back when I was a little fellow I remember visiting my mother's
elder sister's family. I was appalled... they used baking soda and
salt as a "tooth paste".

How? Just swallow instead of spit when you're done brushing. That is
not a good idea, but comes natural to many children.

My dentist when I was a child told me that, while brushing was
important, toothpaste was optional. I haven't seen a lot of evidence
that he was wrong, but I do use stannous fluoride toothpaste now -- it
might work, and all the cool kids use it.

One of the lesser-known NASA commercial spinoffs. I haven't tried it
myself.

It probably worked about as well as whatever your modern, up to date
family was using. You can buy fancy commerical toothpaste today with
baking soda in it, seems to be fairly popular.

I tried that for a while long ago. I didn't like the taste.

>It probably worked about as well as whatever your modern, up to date

Commercial toothpaste was loaded with sugar but that has changed.
Today, it's more likely to be loaded with sodium saccharine or
xylitol, both of which were selected because they don't promote tooth
decay (promote bacteria growth). However, taste is important:
<https://www.twentyfiveoseven.com/products/chili>

What bugs me is the RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasion) number for various
toothpastes containing baking soda. See list at:
<https://hygienewize.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Abrasive-Value-.pdf>
I see quite a few toothpastes made by Arm and Hammer with an RDA from
7 (Plain Baking Soda) to 168 (Arm & Hammer Dental Care PM Fresh Mint).
These cover the range from non-abrasive to sandpaper. A very high RDA
is obviously a bad idea, I wonder if the baking soda is there for
advertising value, instead of cleaning value.

How about testing chili pepper flavored toothpaste?
Made in Russia by Splat:

Better red than decayed.

More exotic toothpaste flavors:

I may have discovered what Tom is using:
"Tom’s of Maine Natural Toothpaste"

Unfortunately it doesn't cure foot in mouth disease.

I like the adherents of "all natural ingredients". I assume that they
treat wounds with moldy bread and eat watermelon for their high blood

I never found one with a flavor I didn't hate so I stopped
buying them many years ago. Baking soda works well for me.

I don't know how old you are, nor your religious preference but when I
was growing up every Catholic boy wore a religions medallion which
was, they assured me, protection from something or another.

Strange, but from memory only the boys wore them, I don't remember the
Catholic Girls wearing medallions... perhaps they didn't do sin (:-)

Over here, of course, they are Buddhist and certainly for the women on
a gold chain (:-)

A quick web search shows that both sexes wear scapular
medals. We just never had the opportunity to check that out
on the girls back then!

Yes, there was that of course, then.

But today, I read in "Freakonomics" that the "nice girls" are putting

Nope.
It's just a larger more diversified and stratified market!
What a great time to be alive!

"But today, I read in "Freakonomics" that the "nice girls" are putting the "professionals" out of business (:-)"

"Nope. It's just a larger more diversified and stratified market! What a great time to be alive!"

But Andrew, when I was young we called loose women, who would fuck on the first date, exactly what they were, and for good reason. Not at all these days, though. But just because women all want to fuck on the first date these days, and are using abortion as their birth control method, hasn't changed anything: these dirty women, who have probably fucked 100 men or more during the last year, insist that you lick their pussy before they insist on fucking, if you're stupid enough to do what they say just because you want to dip your wick. If you go for that shit, and think it represents "just a larger and more diversified and stratified market", you are displaying very poor judgment because you are going to contract a really terrible case of oral STD.

Bill, Andrew was using sarcasm and is pretty much in alignment with you. You are entirely correct about the sexual morals of women these days and these women in fact are committing suicide in ever increasing numbers as they discover an entire world of unhappiness that they thought that they were avoiding with rank male morals. One sin leads to another.
