But even if what you are saying is true, this has nothing to do with the new
precedent being set in the Ukraine. That would simply be a repetition of the old
precedent set in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968.

No. The two halves of Czechoslovakia separated amicably, as the best
way to deal with historical differences between the two parts: the Czechs
are Protestants, while the Slovaks are Roman Catholics, so this is similar
to the existence of Germany and Austria as two separate countries.

Both halves are democratic and pro-Western, even if the Czech Republic
is the more progressive of the two.

That's the real intent of the sanctions. We've sanctioned Putin and
his inner circle. Now we're sanctioning everybody of note, some of
whom are billionaire oligarchs who can muster military troops of
their own if need be. I doubt that any of us in the West can imagine
the degree of pressure this puts on Putin.

He's on a countdown clock right now. He either wins, quickly, or he
loses, completely.

Wedgewood in "The Thirty years war" the onset of the war, Bohemia and its dependencies (Silesia, Lusatia, Moravia) were approximately evenly divided between Utraquist (Hussite), Lutheran, Calvinist and Catholic. Lusatia, given to Saxony in the war, retained it's religion, barring the part occupied by Poland after 1945. It also served as a home for Moravian protestant refugees.

There may have been more utraquists in Bohemia and Morvia, more Lutherans in Silesia and Lusatia.

Its worth noting that Wikipedia disagrees, saying that until 1618 the Hussites were a majority in both Bohemia and Moravia. It may be that my sources, which are probably older, under-counted the countryside, a not unknown phenomenon.

The difference between what is going on in the Ukraine now and what happened
in Hungary in 1956 should be obvious. The Ukraine was in full existence as
an independent and sovereign state not controlled by a Russian puppet
government. Hungary was only in the middle of a rebellion, it had not been a
free country for years.

As a free country, the Ukraine is not different from Norway or Spain.

You are partly right. While the Republican Party has been obsequious
towards Trump... praising Putin as a really clever guy was his own idea,
which came as a surprise to the GOP, and only a very few Republicans
ever supported him with that.

Like the one who said the U.S. should forget about the Ukraine, and
instead consider liberating that wretched dicatatorship to the North
where the heroic "Freedom Convoy" was crushed... one Candace
Owens.

While the Republican Party in general is not distancing itself enough
from its nutjobs, it's still true that most of its members are not nutjobs
themselves, they are only to blame for keeping silent.

This started when a government that was in fact willing to be a
subordinate state to Russia was overthrown. And Czechoslovakia did in
fact have it's own government that had broken away from Russian dominance.

Actually, it is different, in that Norway and Spain are members of NATO,
where an attack on one is treated as an attack on all, and Ukraine isn't
under NATO protection as a member. Why any of the foaming-at-the-mouth
types are saying that this is all the fault of Joe Biden for being
senile and dithering and not sending in troops and air support is beyond
comprehension. He is doing exactly what he has to do. It's the advice
of all Western defense ministers. All that is necessary is to send
appropriate weapons to the Ukrainians, something that few countries did
before the invasion (United Kingdom being a notable exception). The
Russian people are allowing this because they are totally lied to by
their official news sources, and arrested if they protest. I see this
morning that the Russians are arresting little kids who protested.

The Ukrainians are using unmanned drones to attack Russian columns, very
skillfully. Send them drones, and as Zelensky said, he needs
ammunition, not a ride.

An anti-western, anti-USA stance, for starters. The Soviet Union
was the continuation of the Russian emprie, and the current
Russian leadership sees itself as the continuation of both.

Don't forget that Prussia was allied to Russia for a long time,
up to the end of Bismarck's time (at the expense of Poland,
for example). Interestingly, there were also strong sympathies
for Russia on the right wing of the German political spectrum,
in the AfD, until a week ago.
