Two things. Firstly, avoiding the mandatory quarantine requirements
wasn't what we were talking about. We were talking about people actually
getting in to the country, not what they had to do once they were here.

Secondly, I looked up the controversy surrounding Kerry Stokes and from
what I can tell most of it seems to be a beat up because he is wealthy.
I've posted a link to the story from The Guardian which is dated April
23 of 2020, and it states that he was granted a medical exemption to
avoid hotel quarantine and instead isolate with his wife in their "Perth
mansion".

The same article also states that of the 3000 people who had arrived in
WA by air since the quarantine requirements came into effect on April
6th, 900 had been granted exemptions to self isolate in a private
residential address for whatever reason, while 600 where directed to
attend a quarantine centre. Presumably, the remaining 1500 people
weren't required to do anything and did whatever they liked.

If that article reports the facts as they occurred then on the face of
that I can't see how Stookes and his wife were afforded special
treatment or in fact did anything different to the other 898 people who
were granted permission to go home to isolate rather than into a
designated hotel. Other than the fact that the Stokes's "Perth Mansion"
was/is probably a little more plush than the other people's homes :)

Are there any any still stranded?

The biggest reason I'm aware of why people weren't able to get home is
because they simply couldn't get flights. Air travel had mostly shut
down, and what few airlines were still operating were milking the crap
out of the situation by charging people 20 times the normal price of a
one way ticket only to cancel the flight and hold onto the money "to
sort things out" after those who could afford it had handed over a small
fortune to get home.

It was a mess, and I understand the government tried to help where it
could, but with Australians stranded in virtually every country around
the world it's not like we could send government planes to rescue them
even if we *had* the capacity to do so.

Morrison is a muppet who makes ridiculous comments whenever a microphone
is stuck in front of him, but as far as I can tell the plight of
overseas travelers wasn't his fault.
