ROTFPMSL! Norton is a piece of shit. It missed loads of stuff and often grinds the system to a halt.

It's good enough for me. I'm not going to take time and money to

I honestly don't care that you're a software pirate. It's your own
loss, really. You would sacrifice the quality of using your
computers, to save some money. You are screwing yourself much more
than the makers of the software.

Agreed here. If Commander Kinsey finds Windows so unreliable that he
refuses to pay for it, he's free to install his choice of Linux
distribution which will be _so_ much better than Windows. He doesn't
feel bad that he's a thieving piece of crap, but if he installs Linux,
he can install whatever load of software he wants and not even _risk_
eventually feeling bad about not paying a dime.

You would think the freeloaders would indeed do that. But no, people
who run Linux tend to actually give back to the projects, whether with
voluntary monetary contributions, or contributing code, assisting
others, etc. The freeloaders just do what the Commander does,
installing commercial software and cracking it.

I disagree with "have never." I especially disagree with "will never."
It's a nonsensical statement. Neither he, nor anyone else can predict
the future reliably. None of us knows what will happen.

Time, yes. But not much time. Money, maybe, depending on what product
it is.

Not me. I like to choose the product I like best (anti-malware or
anything else) regardless of whether or not it's included with
Windows. For some things I use what comes with Windows, for others I
use other Microsoft products, and for still others, I use third-party
products.

Sure, but for anti-malware, the included protection is good.

Certainly, when it comes to Web browsers, I'm not going to use Edge
primarily. And the new and disastrous Notepad has been replaced by
EditPad Lite. I do use Windows' email app, though, and the calculator
app. If it's good enough, and already there by default, it's good for
me.

We agree, except for "primarily." I use Firefox exclusively. To me
Edge is the worst of all browsers, and Chrome, despite its great
popularity, is almost as bad.

I use Notepad very seldom and only for very simple things (mostly just
for editing my AutoHotkey file), so it's fine for me. I have Notepad++
installed to use for more complicated things, but I hardly ever use
it.

What do you like better about EditPad Lite? Do you think I should give
it a try?

Ugh! Another one I think is terrible--the worst e-mail program I've
ever tried. I use Thunderbird, which I greatly prefer.

Another program I use seldom and only for simple calculations, so the
built-in calculator is also fine for me.

I just downloaded and installed the free version. I set it as the
default text editor and I'll give it a try.

But when I click on AutoHotkey and choose Edit, it still opens in
Notepad. Do you know of a way to have it open in EditPad Lite instead?

Firefox is my default browser, but there are specific instances where
using Chrome, or even Edge, are indicated.

It was recommended to me a while back in another newsgroup, and at the
time I was still happy with the classic Windows Notepad, but when the
new one replaced it, I needed something that could handle large text
files. I've enjoyed using EditPad Lite, in every applicable way.

It was very easy to use the Windows app, because my Microsoft account
email address was already set up in it, natively, and it easily added
my Gmail account as well. Admittedly, though, there are times I go on
the Web to write a reply.

I am actually not familiar with AutoHotkey. Generally, you would have
specific file types set to open with the app of your choice, but I
don't know that it would apply to that function.

I almost never need to edit a large text file, but if I do, I use
Wordpad.

EditPad Lite looks very nice though.

However, as I said, the text file I most often edit is Autohotkey.ahk,
and that still opens in Notepad, since the default for .txt files
doesn't apply to it. Yes I could open it in EditPad Lite by finding
the file, right-clicking it, and choosing EditPad Lite, but that's a
lot of extra trouble. I hope there's some way to have it automatically
open in EditPad Lite. If I decide that I agree with you, and I prefer
it to Notepad, I'd like to use it all the time, not just for some
things.

I just found Options|Configure File Types in EditPad Lite.

Text document was set to *.txt, I changed it to
*.txt *.ahk
*.txt;*.ahk
*.txt; *.ahk
*.txt,*.ahk
*.txt; *.ahk

None of those worked.

Then I scrolled up to C source code, which I never use, and changed
its setting to *.ahk. That didn't work either.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some way to make this work in
Options|Configure File Types? Or some other way to do it?

Double Ugh! Using the Web for e-mail is even a worse choice, as far as
I'm concerned. I *never* do that.

It might be easy, but I want better, not easier. No e-mail program
I've ever tried is perfect. There are always some things I don't like
about any of them, but Thunderbird is the best I've ever tried.

Probably, you need to go into Windows settings, and make the app the
default for that file type.

Email isn't something I use a whole lot, is the thing. If I were more
active on it, I probably would do similarly to you.

No, the default for the .ahk file type needs to be autohotkey.exe,
which it is. I want to change the default for *editing* the file type.
In EditPad Lite, I also tried adding a new file type, *.ahk. That also
didn't work.

OK, I use e-mail a lot.

Ahh, in that case, I really couldn't tell you. There probably is some
trick to doing that, but I'm not aware of it offhand.

It's not critical, of course, but I'd like to be able to use the same
editor for all my text editing.

The problem is probably that my editing of the AHK file is done by
right-clicking the autohotkey task bar icon, and choosing "Edit this
script." not the way most .txt files are edited. If I edit the file by
choosing EditPad Lite from the Context Menu (I added it there), I can
do it that way, but that's extra trouble.

If anyone else here has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Windows Explorer, find ".ahk" file to edit, right click and select Open
With EditPad. Also a good free editor is Notepad++

That's exactly the way I know I can do it. In the message you replied
to, I just said "If I edit the file by choosing EditPad Lite from the
Context Menu (I added it there), I can do it that way, but that's
extra trouble." I'm looking for a way to right-click the autohotkey
task bar icon, and choose "Edit this script" and have it work with
EditPad Lite.

Yes, I know. It's long been installed here.

I experience no loss in quality, in fact it's usually easier to get pirate software than jump through the hoops to pay for it and convince your software that you've done so.

Feeling bad is all in your mind. I feel good that I've got something for nothing. In fact I'm technically sponsored by you, since you pay and I don't. So I've stolen from you and there's fuck all you can do about it.

Commercial software companies have lots of money and don't need donations. If everything was free, I would think most people would donate to the ones they thought were the best.
