With the Clipper Card in the SF Bay Area they don't care if you're a
resident or not. I think that they're just thrilled to get anyone onto
mass transit that they can, especially these days. A visitor can go to
one of the transit agency offices, that keep bankers' hours, show an ID,
and get a senior Clipper Card. Fares are about 50% off.

I'm not quite sure why anyone would bother. The same fare prices are
obtained by just using a credit card to "touch in" and "touch out" of
TFL stations and buses.

Ah, thank you, wasn't aware of that. I was thinking that there is a
weekly cap as well when using phone/credit card, but hadn't thought
about what would happen if you use the system for fewer days.

There is a weekly cap when using a phone/credit card but it's a weekly
cap only for Monday to Sunday.

For a resident that uses the system on a continuous basis then that's
fine. We bought the 7 day passes (four of them), in the tube station,
where they also sold Oyster Cards. It's bizarre that one person is
insisting that visitors can't buy Oyster Cards.

One reason is if you hold a Network Railcard, which gives you 1/3
discount on trains in the UK, you can link it to your Oyster card and
get the discount on Underground and Overground trains in London. You
can't do that with debit or credit cards.

Also, maybe parents might prefer to give their kids an Oyster card
rather than risk letting them have a bank debit card.
