You're not a trusted source after all, in fact you are a proven

Agree, not a chance that any properly qualified medical doctor would
advise against covid vaccination just because she was pregnant or
looking to get pregnant.
My wife was a little bit hesitant about being vaccinated until she
visited her doctor who insisted she have it on the spot which she did.
If people are nervous about getting vaccinated they should talk to their
doctor, medical doctors are the only people who I would trust to give me
such advice and I've not heard of any doctor being anti vax.

I really can't appreciate the logic behind rationing. I mean, it makes
perfect sense during wartime when there are shortages and you need some
sort of system in place to ensure everyone gets their share (although
I'm sure the black market was pretty busy), but years after the war it
makes little sense.

I understand Consumerism causes problems in and of itself, which was no
doubt one of the driving factors behind Menzies' credit squeeze in the
early 1960's, but Labor's plan to keep everyone on rations long after
the war had ended seemed pretty draconian to say the least.

> AFAIK the only wartime measures Menzies retained were price control

Up until the then Treasurer Harold Holt recommended a move to an
unrestricted market which had consequences.

I can remember my old man telling me that he worked as a laborer at the
Altona petrochem complex while they were building it years ago. It was
constructed by Americans who bought all their own equipment out with
them ranging from large earth moving gear, trucks and specialist
machinery to hand tools and other goodies. They brought out
*shit-tonnes* of gear as Americans usually do, and it was all written
off into the contract price of building the complex. They weren't
interested in taking it home as it would cost them too much money to
ship it back home again and they couldn't sell it here without paying
duty on it. They couldn't even give it away without the people receiving
it having to pay tax on the "gift". So they simply dug a massive
football field sized hole in the ground at the rear of the complex,
pushed everything into it and buried the lot.

Fucking madness, but that's the way shit worked back then and it still
does to this day.

The old man said as the project was nearing completion it was common
knowledge that the yanks were going to dispose of the tools and
equipment, so people started binging in any old junk toolbox they could
find and "swapping" them for whatever nice shiny American box full of
tools they could get. Apparently the construction company's view at the
time was as long as they had the correct number of toolboxes to throw
into the hole while the government bean counter stood there and ticked
them off on his clipboard they couldn't have cared less.

lol! petrol theft was certainly a thing way back when, in the days when
cars didn't have petrol caps with locks on them. thieves with a hose and
jerry can would siphon it out of parked cars at night. I can remember
buying a petrol cap with a key lock to prevent it when the auto
accessory stores started selling them.

Ridiculously so.

Still, I'm not at all surprised that Felix got it so remarkably wrong,

at the recent 'Kill the Bill' rallies there was no violence or property
damage, and no arrests. I remember a radio interview with a top cop
saying there were no arrests.

Before I had my vax, I had to get a *clearance* from two doctors and two
specialists, especially given the *known* side effects of AZ. Once I had
that, jab away. 3rd primary tomorrow, a Pfizer, after the first two
which were AZ. Then I can book in a booster for 6 months hence.

Speaking of hospital beds being taken up by Covid victims, at the local
hospital there were no spare beds. And that was *before* any Covid
victims. A lot of hospitals have spare beds but no staff to man them -
which means they can't be used. Anti-Vaxers are more selfish than people
realise.

In Vic the number of active cases peaked about a month ago at approx
24,000, since then the number of active cases is about half of the peak
at approx 10,000 so the wards are actually emptying and there is plenty
of capacity to cater for non covid cases.
BTW what does "we fully insured people" mean?

There is SFA *spare* bed capacity in Victorian public hospitals - and
that has been the situation for a very long time. Any active Covid
patient who require a bed will be dumping normal cases out of the beds.
That includes those requiring *elective* surgery.

> of capacity to cater for non covid cases.

What then is the talk of *elective surgery* being delayed because of
Covid demand in Victoria?

> BTW what does "we fully insured people" mean?

People who *pay extra* for hospital care. You know, private medical
insurance. Well, maybe a piss poor businessman such as yourself cannot
afford such a luxury.

The purpose was to limit consumer spending. It's probably also
relevant that the great depression had barely ended when war broke
out, hence much of the population was already used to hardship (if
only because they could only afford to buy the bare necessities).
Keynesian economics never had many adherents in those days.

The main proponent of free trade at the time was Bert Kelly, Liberal
Member for Wakefield (SA). Not many on his side of politics agreed
with him, least of all Black Jack McEwen, who was deputy PM at the
time... which might help explain Holt's disappearance since Black Jack
became PM as a result. :)
It was Goof Whitlam who cut tariffs in a fit of pique which resulted
in a massive increase in the trade deficit. IIRC most of them were
subsequently reinstated

That surprises me as most of the heavy machinery available immediately
after WW2 was American equipment that had been used by their navy
seebees building wartime airfields in the south Pacific (ex WW2 D7
dozers used to be common) Heaps of American Lendlease trucks were
also sold here as war surplus.

Can't say I've ever come across immediate post war American tools as
they were restricted imports, I think until well into the 60's. Pre
war tools, such as Herbrand, were highly valued and frequently copied
by Australian tool manufacturers after the war.

Kind of a harsh way of doing it.

Fair point, but by 1950 the world was a different place.

It may have been different if it was Australian government stock (as in
Lend Lease) rather than that owned by a private foreign company.

I know there was a heavy transport trailer business in the immediate
post war period that made a fortune out of ex military gear. Could have
been Loadmaster, but I can't remember.

Very well into the 1960's. And not just tools.

At the time being the "Commonwealth of Australia" meant that any
imported goods coming in from non Commonwealth countries were heavily
taxed and to the point where it made things so ridiculously expensive
that it was just wasn't worth the trouble to do so. But there were ways
around it.

For example, Ford Australia used a lot of American sourced parts in the
make-up of their local "Australian" models, and to get around the
problem of American sourced items being taxed to death Ford in the US
would ship the parts to Canada where they could be dispatched from a
"Commonwealth Country" and not incur heavy tax penalties for coming from
the US directly.

They did this with vehicles as well as parts. Every locally made Ford V8
had it's engine come in this way until local V8 production started here
in 1972. Similarly, Cars and trucks not made here but imported for sale
here were handled in the same way. My F-100 was built in November of
1956 in the Louisville Kentucky assembly plants as a right hand drive
"export" model, but it was rail freighted to Canada before it was handed
over to Ford's Canadian arm before being put on the boat and sent here.

Most of the stuff I saw was English. Particularly machine tools.

People with comprehensive medical insurance.
