The definition of "rural" can be variable, where I live is just 53km
West of Melb CBD yet in the lockdowns we were classed as regional,
wife's brother lives Sth East of Melb the exact same distance from the
CBD yet his area was classed as Metro.
In terms of travel time we are about half way between the city hospitals
and Ballarat and recent experience is that the Ballarat hospital is far
better than going to the city.

Yep. Half the time we get called "Rural", and the other half "Regional".
My rates notice says either "Rural Residential" or "Rural Conservation"
depending on whatever mood Council is in on the day.

Agree 100%.

For anything relatively minor that can't be fixed by my local GP I go to
Bacchus, and anything they can't handle I go to Ballarat. Usually you're
in and out quicker than it takes to drive there and back.

A few months ago my mother in law thought she might be having a turn so
we called an ambulance. After doing their checks they thought she was
okay but decided to take her to the hospital anyway just to be sure. Our
nearest major public hospital that we'd get taken to used to be
Sunshine, but because of recent rezoning it's now the Mercy in Werribee
so that's where they took her.

They dumped her in the casualty section where after seeing the triage
nurse on arrival she spent the next 9 hours sitting in the waiting room
and never saw another person until a doctor came out and told everyone
in the room that they had an "emergency" to deal with and it would be at
least another 6 hours before they could see anyone.

At that point she rang me and I went and picked her up and brought her
home having never seen a doctor at all.

The definition of rural is based on population density more than it is

Sounds like regional *and* metropolitan Victoria.

It's been like that since forever, but that's our "zoned" major
hospital. If it's not life threatening, go to Ballarat.

This is where the denizens of Bumhole (Vic) cut their own wrists.
Figuratively. If the little snowflakes hadn't arked up about a harmless
toxic dump being located in their dump of a town they would have got a nice
little hospital all of their own. (It was to be attached to the large
genetics research facility). So don't whinge you short-sighted sooks!

That`s a bit slack. We have a hospital here in Moruya (with a new
level 4 being built from early next year.) Another one at Batemans Bay
(23 km north) Another at Bega, (regional hosp. for now) with Canberra
only an hour or so away.

So we are pretty well covered come what may. Glad MIL was ok.

Yeah, it was actually. That particular hospital has a bit of a
reputation for that kind of thing, but that was exceptional I think. I
told the old girl to make an official complaint as I thought sitting for
9 hours before being told to go home without seeing a doctors was
bordering on medical negligence to be honest, but she didn't want to
make a scene. She was just happy to get back home and be okay.

We're getting a new major hospital in Melton which is 10 minutes up the
road from us, with with the last 18+ months of lockdowns putting the
state's finances down the toilet I think it might run somewhat behind
schedule.
