Don't you think "quite mad" is understating matters somewhat? IIRC, Paul
categorised Darren as "barking mad" and that's quite a deal closer to
the mark.

Nothing astonishes Noddy so much as common sense and plain dealing.

You never had any integrity to speak of Darren. 20+ years of fake claims
just to big yourself? You haven't a clue what *integrity* even is, much
less what the word itself means.

I've got a new Mac mini which replaced the old Mac mini that I was given
for free, by far the most reliable computer I've ever owned.
I don't claim to know anything about computers and I don't need to
because it just does what its supposed to and never gives me any problems.
Funny thing is I hate iPhone's but I think the Mac Mini is brilliant.

Yeah, funny how the Mac was the leader, the others merely followers.

The Mac Mini is a brilliant piece of kit, it just does what it is
supposed to and doesn't give you grief. I will be sticking a 1TB SSD in
it soon, get rid of the old 5400 rpm platter drive. Generally, if I want
to tinker with computers, I drag out a Windows based one - software and
hardware tinkering galore, and they need it. Been doing a lot of that
this past couple of weeks, going to give away a couple of my old Window
(Win7) computers. I built them around 2007-2010 from scratch but they
have spent a lot of time in the bottom of the wardrobe unused these past
few years. Time they had some love - from someone else.

Both presumptuous *and* wrong.

No, keith that's a light jab designed to ever so slightly dent your ego
and draw you into proving a point for me. The mudslinging I have been
subjected to by your new mate for at least a decade is of the worst
kind. The worst kind and *relentless*. "Appliance salesman", "former
Labor Party member", "towbar fitter", "mudflap fitter" and on and on it
goes. All completely false and without basis. 100% fabricated nonsense
and outright lies.

But not just him, you're (belatedly) joining in on the party. "Well I do
realise that most of it (with the possible exception of
BASIC) was right over your head."

Both presumptuous and false.

Now, according to you I should just "get over it" however a lightest of
jabs directed at you only to make a point gets this response from you:

"OK, you got to make the accusation, now back it up with fact. You don't
know and cannot possibly what I do, but you go ahead and make the
accusation, that is mud slinging at its worst."

So "get over it" according to you would be the right response? See
your hypocrisy here keith?

Oh, how could you possibly know what people are capable of? I've just
shown you where you were both presumptuous *and* wrong, do you want to
go again?

I'm simply observing a change in your behaviour, nothing to do with any
"agenda". Your comments in response to felix in spades. They can't
possibly be any more trite or infantile.

Or your dodging of questions and cringe reasons for doing so, just
embarrassing quite frankly.

I'm not actually, it's a genuine concern. Maybe my perception of what
the problem might be is wrong but the change in your behaviour is
certainly real.

In any event you're pretty loose with your accusations but I suppose
*you* don't feel any shame over your comments?

Ok well, I was being sincere whether you believe it or not.

I don't like SSD's. you can lose all your data in an instant.

Only if you are stupid. Anyone who does not have at least one backup
drive that they regularly back their data up to deserves to lose it. I
always taught people to have 3 at a minimum. Grandfather, father, son is
the principle but I also suggested they had an offsite backup as well.

If you are running a business and have a failure you need to look at how
long it will take you to be back up and running. Cloud based backup is
good because it is offsite, however there are also disadvantages such as
the time it takes to recover and security of your data. Onsite backup
provides the opportunity for the fastest recovery however if you have a
fire or other event your backup could be destroyed.

If you have a malware event, the 3 backup policy is your best chance of
recovery with minimal disruption.

SSD drives have become much more reliable than they were in the past,
however both mechanical and ssd drives are prone to instant failure.

Chances are though that before it fails, your hard drive (either
mechanical or ssd) will be giving you some warning signs such as slow
running or noises. Most people ignore them which causes them much
anguish when they fail.

Ummm. You can on a platter too. Either one though, you *must* backup.
Unless of course you need to destroy everything before the guvmint
forensics kick your door in...

I'll pass that on to an aquaintance who lost her entire photo library.

that takes care of the data, but what about the OS and software? which

mechanical drives much less so, and data recovery is possible

SSD's are noiseless, and mechanical drives have a monitoring function
ie. S.M.A.R.T.

lol. they compared 12 month old SSD's to 4 yo Hard Drives

but..

I haven't looked at it yet, but the thing is with SSD's (afaik) they can
only be written to a finite number of times. therefore failure at some
point is guaranteed. I have HD's that are 15 yo still in use! but I'm
sure SSD's will keep getting better. no doubt they are the way of the
future.

In most situations you are better off doing a rebuild from scratch which
whilst it may take more time, allows for a more reliable system updated
to the latest drivers and operating system patches. You can get software
that does create images on the go however most major business operators
have a SOE image on a server which is booted to over the network and
rebuilt from there as that is their desired and tested working system.
For a home user creating an image is time consuming and generally is not
done by the average person as they don't know how or have the storage
capacity / software to do as such.

A fresh re-image also removes old unnecessary software remnants from
programs that have been uninstalled and or updated.

Actually I have seen many more mechanical drive failures than ssd
failures. Especially in the commercial environments where I was working.
SSD's generally don't get damaged if a unit is dropped which is a very
common cause of failure on mechanical drives. Recovery is possible from
both mechanical and ssd drives now, however if the drive is bad you need
deep pockets and the chances are with either type that you cannot
recover your data.

These are the guys I used to use https://cbldatarecovery.com.au/

I'm not talking only about noises. SSD's also have monitoring software
you can install. Look at Samsung magician for one. Another hint is to
not buy cheap SSD drives. I did a recovery on one this week which had
areas that were unable to be read. It was running slow and locking up
which is a sure sign of an imminent failure. It was also a cheaper brand
of ssd drive. Most people will just complain about the machine being
slow without bothering to think there might be a cause. Generally if you
check for errors in the event logs of the computer you can see patterns
of issues leading towards hdd failure. BTW most of the time the hdd is
dead before S.M.A.R.T. says there's an issue with your drive.

Then of course there are manufacturers who stuff up and make a drive
where failure is guaranteed. Think Seagate 7200.11 series. They were
recoverable but it was a pita.

The only thing I have here that runs mechanical drives now is my NAS
which runs WD Red pro drives. It has four in raid with one able to fail
at any time without issues. My other backup drives I use on a regular
basis are ssd's as I can throw them in with my laptop and not worry
about them.

Loves playing the victim, doesn't he?

Instead of just walking away and ignoring people that he *clearly*
doesn't get on with, he continually engages them until it turns into a
shit-fight which he *himself* is happy to do his bit to bring on, and
once it occurs he *then* uses it as an opportunity to play the "innocent

The bloke is absolutely fucking delusional .....

I've been running SSD's in machines since they first came out and have
never had a problem with any of them. On the other hand, I have a
cupboard with a dozen or so dead or flakey hard drives :)

Yep. I have 6 machines here that I'm gradually in the process of
updating from old mechanical drives to SSD's, and the transformation in
some of them has been astonishing. Boot time on one machine went from a
minute and a half to 12 seconds, and the general all round performance
upgrade is phenomenal.

Given the cost today, I don't know why anyone would ever be interested
in anything else.

SSD drives monitor drive health very well indeed. If you ignore warnings
they can fail just like mechanical hard drives but mechanical drives can
fail without warning because of mechanical failure that S.M.A.R.T
sometimes can't predict.

In any event you must back up, that's the most important bit.
